Job websites are rubbish! How do I find a job?!

I’m looking for a part time job to make a little extra money alongside my regular job (can’t up hours).

Trying to navigate job sites is a nightmare and I don’t know how I’ll find something!

*There's often little detail to what the job entails
*There's often no links to the actual place of work - one job said contact x person for more details - even though it didn’t give a contact number or place of work or any extra info really

  • There's often no more info than a postcode. *Often little detail about working hours (I can't just assume regular hours )

How can yo apply for a job without being able to research it first?

Argh!

Have you looked at the indeed app?
I found my last two jobs on there.

This was the total jobs website.

I’ve looked on the indeed website, but not the app.

How do you find more info/ contact details?

I feel you OP.

I have an Indeed profile. For some reason, even though I have put down my profession as ‘project manager’ I keep getting notifications for part time retail work. I do not understand why.

The one time I applied for a job, I spent ages making sure my CV and cover letter were relevant and up to date, to immediately get an email to say the role was actually gone.

Monster have just emailed me telling me my CV has expired - like for some reason them recommending 0 jobs in the past however many years makes me in the slightest bit arsed.

And don’t even get me started on the jobs that look great online, then you enquire and the starting salary is like £20k below what you’re already on?!

I’m most upset at the moment though that DH has applied for every part time job going in our area and been knocked back immediately. I don’t know what he’s doing wrong - his CV and letter are good, he’s not a professional going for unskilled stuff. I can only assume it’s the fact he’s been out of work for 6 years plus he’s over 25 that works to his detriment Sad

Sorry for the mega rant OP!

Gingernaut · 18/09/2019 12:15

indeed, totaljobs and monster are full of spammy ads for commission only sales and the like.

It's awful. There is absolutely no vetting of 'employers' or agencies and the same ad is just C+P'd in quick succession.

I'm a lab technician. I deleted my Monster profile after one too many late night VOIP calls about yet another commision only sales role.

If you're interested in local authority work or the nhs then their websites can be really good and span a variety of skills. I've found other website dont necessarily offer real jobs or you never hear back.

InOtterNews · 18/09/2019 14:38

Through recruitment agencies mainly - but do go and meet with them face to face rather than using an online portal. Choose agencies carefully if you are looking for something specific (i.e. I work in charity so chose agencies that specifically work in the third sector). I've got 2 permanent jobs over the years through short temp contracts too. Also once signed up with agency - call them regularly to see what they have/or know what's coming up.

Also, get a list together of organisations you want to work for, and once a week check their websites for vacancies.

Incandescentwithage · 18/09/2019 14:40

Agencies have never let me down.

Linked in

whitershadeofpale · 18/09/2019 14:58

LinkedIn, Guardian jobs and agencies for me. I'm based in London though which I'm aware might make a difference.

Jarimbert · 18/09/2019 16:14

A friend just got told they didn't get an apprentice role. They actually said in the rejection email that they didn't have enough experience?!
I'd just like to know at what point customer service roles became about sales? I search for customer service jobs and 99% of them are sales roles.

Does Facebook have a local jobs page for your town? Mine does and I’ve found 2 really nice part-time jobs through that.

Coffeeonthesofa · 18/09/2019 16:27

It does seem to be that part-time work in particular is advertised a lot on our local business page on Facebook. It does tend to be jobs like bar work, catering, retail in small shops etc. Some part time accounting or IT jobs as well though. Some people even post asking if anyone is hiring.

Gingernaut · 19/09/2019 13:29

Many part time roles with fixed hours have disappeared, replaced with zero hours or minimum hour contracts with the stipulation that employees must be 'fully flexible'.

Who, with childcare or other commitments can be 'fully flexible'?

MissDew · 19/09/2019 13:41

Job Vacancy websites are pretty horrendous. I suspect they copy and paste each others' vacancies as has been said.

There's really no other way, unfortunately. Unless you've some how got your ear to the ground or have got contacts.

My husband is on the job search treadmill. He's fairly selective with the job vacancy websites he uses. He's applying for jobs every day/week. However, there's still notifications about random jobs totally unrelated to his skill set. Also, his pet hate, job vacancies with will spelling errors.

Longdistance · 19/09/2019 13:44

I’ve got the Indeed and CV online apps. I flick through those occasionally. I find part time ones are few and far between tbh. Nearly everything I see is ft.
