Teignmouth holiday..

We are staying in Shaldon but want to explore Teignmouth and Dawlish
Are there any open top bus tours for those areas? Also we would like to get the train along the coast but any tips on the best way to do that? We are thinking to get on at dawlish and go to Exeter then back again.
Any other things that we could do. Thinking cheap/free so no theme parks but happy with a small spend
Thanks

Following as we are visiting later on in the year and we were wondering the same!

LittleAndOften · 21/09/2019 18:38

Have you got any dcs?

monstermunchforlunch · 21/09/2019 18:39

There’s a fabulous (free) park in Teignmouth close to the arcades and dinosaur mini golf which is very reasonable iirc.

stoneagemum · 21/09/2019 18:41

Get the train from teignmouth, go all the way round to Exmouth and back again, you could get the ferry back from Exmouth to Starcross then the train back to teignmouth.
Stagecoach are the main bus operator and sometimes do open top buses but we are coming my out of season for that now.

stoneagemum · 21/09/2019 18:42

The wildlife sanctuary in Shaldon is small but good, and there is smugglers tunnel leading to Ness beach in Shaldon also

There's an open top bus that goes between Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth every hour. It's the 222 or 221, I cant remember but it's a bit too quick!

Teignmouth is lovely, make sure you walk the back street near the harbour, the ferry across from Shaldon is fun and very friendly. As is the life boat house/museum.

Peabodys do amazing pancakes and reasonable coffee and have sofas in the back. It looks a bit run down but is very child friendly.

Make sure you check out what is on at the Pavillion as they often do workshops for children although they are a bit pricey. TAAG also do children's workshops but usually only in the holidays.

The best seafood in the area is at The Crabshack but you do need to book quite far ahead.

Best ice cream is from Jane's but it might not be open this time of year.

The scooter park and playground near The Den are great. The playground has a splash park which is only working about half the time but worth taking a couple of towels just in case.

The beach at Dawlish Warren is the nicest out of the local ones. It gets crazy busy in the holidays and Teignmouth beach is often quieter. Its also a much longer walk from the car park at Dawlish Warren. There are plenty of arcades if that's your sort of thing.

A really good thing to remember In case it rains is that several of the caravan parks in the area do day passes for their facilities including swimming pools. So if does rain then you can always go there for a swim. Lady's Mile is one and another is Cofton. The lido at Teignmouth is nice but the shallow end is still quite deep and it can be cold!

Let me know if you have any questions I can help with!!

Hi OP we went to Exmouth in June and did a train ride to Dawlish for the day - it's a pretty disappointing place, very little to do so I'd second heading to Dawlish Warren instead.
If you can get to Exeter Quay you can hire bikes and kayaks to go down the river, the routes are really lovely.
I know you're keen on free/cheap stuff but Diggerland is a lot of fun!

Chatt3rb0x · 22/09/2019 07:35

I’d get yourselves to Dartmoor if outdoorsy. The park is good. There is also crazy golf, Cherry on the Too ice cream shop which is fab and a pier. My dc used to like walking to the giant letters watching for trains. The beach obviously.Sure you can get the train to Exeter from Teignmouth. Stoke Gabriel is beautiful ( 30 mins away)and great for crabbing. Totnes is only 30 mins away and lovely to walk round but if you really like the outdoors get yourselves to Dartmoor which is only 30 mins away too and has masses to do which is free.

If you have any spare time to build into the itinerary, use it in Dartmouth or Totnes or Paignton in that order!

AngelOfDeathNix · 22/09/2019 17:59

The little zoo at Shaldon is sweet, you can often find an offer on Groupon. We walked over to Teignmouth from Shaldon and then caught the little ferry back. Lovely to have mooch through the little back streets of Teignmouth, there is a lovely little cake shop which sells slabs of cake, think it was called The Hobbit!

We like the rides at Dawlish Warren - £20 for 20 tokens is very reasonably priced when you only need one token per ride. Lovely beach and there are amusements aswell. There's also a pottery painting cafe a little further into Dawlish Warren for the rainy days.

The House of Marbles at Bovey Tracey is a free afternoon or morning out. Not enough to keep you occupied all day, but it has giant marble runs, garden games, a little museum, shop and cafe. My kids were fascinated with the glass blowing demonstrations and has their hands cast in glass.

If you are prepared to drive a bit, my kids loved Morwellham Quay. It's about an hours drive from Dawlish Warren, but again, reasonably priced and lots to do.

Finally, you cannot beat the carvery at the Smugglers Inn, on the road between Dawlish and Teignmouth! I could eat a great big roast dinner now.....yum!

Craftycorvid · 22/09/2019 18:03

Dawlish and Teignmouth are so so pretty and gently stranded in the 1950s (in a charming way). The main street in Dawlish has a stream running through it and black swans populate it. Lovely stretch of rail line along that way too, quite one of the prettiest in England.

Orgasmicscalp · 22/09/2019 20:54

House of Marbles looks great.. my kids would love that
The Round Robin trip also looks brilliant bit it's a bit pricey so may save that for a return visit.
Thanks so much for the ideas, have a decent list now

Crealey has plenty to do (including indoors if it's wet)

Feeling quite smug reading this as I live in Teignmouth! Such a lovely place.

You can get on the train at Teignmouth and head up to Exeter and you'll go along the coast - it's stunning. You can also walk along Teignmouth seafront and head all the way out toward Dawlish on the coastal path directly next to the Trainline.

Seafront is quite nice. My son loves the pier, the play park, skate park and mini golf. The beachcomber on the front was the best place to eat but it's been shut for a while now 😢. Crabbing on the back beach is good too.

Dawlish is nice for a walk to see the black swans. Dawlish Warren has a nice nature reserve as well as the seafront hub.

Shaldon is great, particularly the smugglers tunnel. The Ness is nice but quite expensive. The passenger ferry between Shaldon beach and Teignmouth back beach is lovely too.

The lido is shut for the season now but Lady's mile and Colton holiday parks are not far away.

Further afield we like: Haldon Forest for a good walk, Haytor for a climb and views - anywhere on Dartmoor really, Parke (National trust) in Bovey quite near House of Marbles, stover country park is lovely, Dartmouth and Brixham are lovely seaside towns but quite far away.

Hope you have a lovely trip.

teatimedreamer · 22/09/2019 21:15

Meant to say, there was an open top bus tour over the summer but not seen it recently.
