Which Vacuum to buy, cheap or £££?

For what I need, there doesn't seem to be a midway solution.. I definitely want a bagless cylinder. I'm not interested in Dysons/Sharks/ or any of the other modern fancy vacs. My main criteria is that it has a 10m cord. I don't want cordless because too many of my friends complain about them & I have a large house to clean. At one end of the scale is a Vax for about £70 with a decent sized collection box but a shortish cord & at the other end of the scale is a Miele for an eyewatering, sell-a-kidney £300. None of the cheap vacuums seem to have extra long cords. Wwyd?

I can get a Vax pet hair one for around £70 which has a decent collection tank

I'd wait until Black Friday and research in the meantime. We got our corded dyson on BF two years ago for a steal. I generally go on the advice that if you buy cheap you will buy twice.

DH does the vacuuming and despite the amount of Dyson's and cordless vacs we've had, he only uses the Henry.

I can't seem to find a single moderately priced vac with a 10m cord.

If you buy MÍele, you will never buy better for sure.

The Henry is a star vacuum cleaner too.

As for the cable length, surely you can always use an extension lead.

ButternJam · 17/09/2019 20:52

I could use an extension lead but it's a pita as I'd have to lug the reel around with me.

Have a look on Amazon Warehouse for used vacuums - I just picked up a returned Miele for £125 (normally £200) - in original packaging and perfectly fine just someone returned as they changed their mind. Will save you £££.

magicmallow · 18/09/2019 11:19

Also guaranteed as per normal amazon purchases.

Due to a strange set of circumstances (i.e. I didn't intend this to happen), I have 2 vacuums: a Miele cat and dog and a Dyson v8. I use the Miele once a month to do a really good vacuum, and the Dyson inbetween. The Miele is the best vacuum cleaner I've ever had - it does a terrific job. But it is heavy and the cord is a PITA and on a hot day I really hate lugging the damn thing upstairs. The Dyson does a decent job and is so much lighter to use, it has honestly been a lifechanging purchase. I would seriously recommend it to anyone, without hesitation.

I've used Henry hoovers and generally not found them to be of anything like a similar quality.

I have a beaten and battered aged Miele that is an absolute stalwart vacuum cleaner. I had a Henry because everyone raved about them but I was really disappointed, it regularly fell over and I didn't find it that good at clearing up.

LadyR77 · 18/09/2019 12:50

Definitely don't get a Henry - awful things! I borrowed one for a while and hated it - heavy and awkward to manoeuvre, it kept falling over. And it wasn't nearly good enough at actually picking up dirt to make up for its shortcomings. We have a Vax Air Reach, which we paid under £100 for and it's great - nice long cord and hose, and it picks up well.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 18/09/2019 13:24

I've bought several vacuum cleaners but the best has been a Miele.

ButternJam · 19/09/2019 15:38

Wayhey! found the vac of my dreams... The Vax Air Stretch, a bagless cylinder just as I wanted with a mammoth 12m reach! Grin Even the Miele's can't match that. I can finally do my kitchen, hallway, stairs & landing without unplugging.
