If DS loves The Hobbit....

What else will he enjoy reading?

He's in year 6 and a very reluctant reader. He's brought home countless books from scvool and never really been interested in any of them. But his new teacher steered him towards The Hobbit last week and he loves it. He has never, in living memory, chosen to read a book after school without bribery encouragement, but he'll happily pick it up after school for a quick 15 minute read.

Strangely enough, The Hobbit is the first book I remember loving when I was in year 4, and I've read it dozens of times since. For some reason I hated LOTR, I've tried to read it so many times, and I just can't get into it.

So what else will he enjoy? He loves fantasy, anything with dragons or ninjas (bonus points for dragons and ninjas) and a strong goody/baddy storyline.

Help me, oh wise MNers. I've never seen him gripped by a book and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, I want to see more of it!

The Earthsea books by Ursula Leguin are absolutely fantastic. Dragons/wizards/nature and beautifully written.

Lots of great suggestions, thank you. I recognise a few but some are new to me so I'll have a look later.

Eragon is fab!

Celebelly · 17/09/2019 18:36

Terry Pratchett wrote quite a few young adult and children's books as well as the adult Discworld series, definitely worth a look.

Harry Potter?

Crookshanks24 · 17/09/2019 19:12

The Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud fab, lots of adventure, with humour.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 18/09/2019 03:29

The Weirdstone of Brisengamen. Excellent book!

Ds loved the Hobbit and has been churning through Pratchett ever since (Tiffany Aching, then Rincewind, now the Watch). He found Narnia and Artemis Fowl too scary.

Other recent hits include Who let the Gods out? and The Day the World went Loki (both are series).

What does he like specifically about the Hobbit?

BlueChampagne · 18/09/2019 13:01

A Series of Unfortunate Events was popular when DS1 was in Y5/6. Strong goodies and baddies but no ninjas or dragons I'm afraid.
