Have you successfully started exercising after being overweight?

I'm just beginning to get going. I'm 2.5stone overweight & boy, doesn't my body know it. After a nervous breakdown I barely moved for 3 years & I'm now starting to get going again but I'm having to do so at a gentle pace. My problem is, my body doesn't shut up after exercising & I can't relax. Today I walked about 10k steps (used to only do 1k) but after I'm completely shattered & need to lie down for a nap. But now it's nearly bedtime I can feel my body won't relax. It's like my muscles are all agitated. How can I get around this so I can get a decent nights sleep?

I use the REN magnesium and kelp spray on my legs straight after exercising. Stops the cramps and twitching.

Have a look at couch to 5k

My mum's friend went from no exercise to running 5k and is now assuming for 10k. She was a size 18-20 at the beginning

Pilates is both strengthening and restorative and relaxing.

Prettywallpaper · 16/09/2019 21:10

I feel like I need a deep tissue massage. I wish I could understand what's going on because I was only walking, it's just a lot of walking for what I'm used to.

I lost about 3/4 of the weight I needed to shed before starting to exercise. I wish I'd begin sooner. It didn't speed the weight loss, but it toned me up and (even though it seems counter intuitive) it gave me for more energy.

I started with C25K, which I did, rather sullenly, as a chore to be ticked off because it was good for me. It took months before I enjoyed it. I added Pilates, and gradually extended the running beyond 5k.

I think it's the getting off this couch in the first place that it the hardest bit. And even though you're finding it still a bit tough, you're doing it!

I started DDPYoga using the app. Two years in doing it three or four times a week I’m six stone down and feeling fantastic - more energy than ever and my lower back pain and general aches and pains of life are long gone.

Pinkarsedfly · 16/09/2019 21:16

Magnesium tablets.
Epsom salts in the bath.
Foam roller.
Yoga.

All work for me. I was 2 stone overweight when I started C25K in March. I now run 5k 3 times a week, and I’ve lost a stone after joining Slimming World in June.

One more stone to go, and I’m fitter than I’ve ever been. If I can do it, you can!

I started weekly gym workouts recently at size 20. A couple of months in I'm actually starting to really enjoy it. It's getting your body used to exercise again after a long time. I signed up with a PT because there was no way in hell, I would go regularly without someone to bully me into it and he does give a really good massage which helps too.

ARoomWithoutADoor · 16/09/2019 21:37

Wow, Finn 6st is amazing.
I have loose ligaments and lots of joint pain. Do you think DDP yoga would be okay for me to try?
Is it expensive, please?

yellowallpaper · 17/09/2019 09:11

Hot bath before bed? Epsom salts type bath product?

ALittleBitAlexis · 17/09/2019 09:24

Epsom salts in the bath - you can buy it in bulk on eBay (10kg for £10) so you don't have to be sparing with it!

Foam rollers are evil but they really help.

Make sure you're wearing good, supportive shoes.

I like good old fashioned deep heat on my calves, too.

kittykarate · 17/09/2019 09:29

But now it's nearly bedtime I can feel my body won't relax. It's like my muscles are all agitated.

I get this - I call it 'hot leg'. My thighs feel hot to the touch and tingly/twitchy. It usually only happens if I've worked out really late in the evening or if I've pushed myself a bit beyond the usual.

As you've just started out on increasing your exercise, then it probably is just this - it will ease after the first few times at that level of intensity. Baths can help, so can foam rollers (I think aldi or lidl had them in recently so you might be able to get a bargain).

musicmaiden · 17/09/2019 12:09

It may be you need to increase your steps more gradually. Maybe try to do 5k first and then build it up a bit more slowly.

Couch to 5k is brilliant but I would wait until you're more comfortable walking those steps first.

FinnBalorsAbs · 17/09/2019 17:14

@ARoomWithoutADoor Honestly it's just incredible. I Chromecast the app to my TV or play it on my iPad while the DC are napping or eating dinner and it's incredible. I was always so self conscious about going to a gym or a class where someone might see me wobbly about so it's perfect for me.

If you sign up through in app purchases it's madly expensive because they have to pay commission to the App or Android Stores. But I had a code thing to sign up through their website - a free month and then $9 a month (which currently works out about £7 a month) with no contract. If you sign up there you then just use your login details in the app.

If you're interested I can dig it out and DM it.

ARoomWithoutADoor · 17/09/2019 17:39

Oh, I AM interested at that price (I could maybe afford that)
so, yes pls, Finn as i am super rubbish with tech and need all help.
Thanks.xxx

Carshmar · 17/09/2019 18:23

Ooh could you dm me too please, that sounds fab!

FinnBalorsAbs · 17/09/2019 20:29

I think I have messaged you both successfully!
