This morning a robin flew into our house

Heard some weird noises from the kitchen and found a robin flying around. I'm ashamed to say I squealed with shock. DDs found it amazing (it landed on 6yo at one point)

The poor thing looked terrified. It flew into the window several times trying to escape (I was trying to open it fully, it's only partially opens most of the time)

It was beautiful. I've never been so close to one.

That's lovely!
We used to have one who hopped up the path most days, then jumped in the kitchen and helped himself to the dog's food.

And we had another one whose baby got in through an open window without me realising because I was outside in the garden. The parent bird shouted at me and bounced up and down in front of me until I went into the house, found it and let it out.

We also had a one legged one a couple of years ago. I called him Lefty LePugh Grin

They are fab little things.

Poor little frightened thing. But, yes, amazing to get so close.

Earlier this summer, whenever I parked in one particular over-grown corner of the supermarket carpark, my car would be attacked by a robin. Perhaps it saw its reflection in the window, and thought that there was an interloper? And sometimes it would perch on the wing mirror and chatter at me.

Absolutely amazing to experience. I'd sit in the carpark for ages!

I remember one hopping into the kitchen when I was a kid. They also regularly do the classic robin thing of hopping on to DH's spade/fork at the allotment. Smile

I have a regular robin who comes and sits on my fence near me when I’m having a coffee in the garden- I chat to him Smile

DD2 has been stalking the garden the last few days with binoculars trying to watch birds so she was very happy with her close encounter. I hope it doesn't get quite so close in future. Back garden will do.

Robins are my favourite garden bird and I have one who visits my garden regularly. When I open the curtains at my patio doors each morning he is usually sitting waiting - I throw out a variety of bird food and he's a fierce little thing and sees off all the other birds while he has a nibble. I call him Ichabod, Ichy for short Grin

We have robins in the DIY warehouse I work in. They love the seeds and bird food that get spilled. They are very clever at getting in and out through the main doors with customers . NB robins are very territorial and will kill other robins encroaching on their area, not quite as loveable as we'd like to think

We have an elderly free range rabbit, and she has a robin keeping her company most of the time. I’ve no idea if it’s the same one, but they’re never far apart, probably as the rabbit is fond of a little digging, and unearths treasure for the robin. There are guinea pigs outside too, although they go in hutches at night, and I just love watching them all hang out together.

I love robins. Of course my mum and grandma would have had strokes of a bird flew into the house (dad luck).

I regularly had to kick a robin out of my car which used to make itself at home in there if I left the door open and walked away.

I trained a robin to eat from my hand once. I held some crumbs of cheese at arms length, and looked the other way. It was a lengthy process, but worth it to gain the little bird's trust.

We were having a pub lunch recently, sitting outside in the beer garden. A robin spotted us and immediately came hopping around looking for scraps. It was so close it was almost sitting on my lap, and I was picking the seeds out of a bread roll to give to it, but they really like worms and bugs, so it was giving me some very scornful looks. It sounds bonkers but I felt like we were having an actual conversation Blush

I do get freaked if they get into the house though.

I had a robin come in earlier this summer. It was flying around but I managed to catch it in my hands and let it out. Did the same with some kind of warbler in France. Also a swallow in my bedroom a couple of years ago.

SwearyMaclary · 16/09/2019 19:17

Where I grew up they used to say that a robin flying into a house was the spirit of a loved one.

A friend of mine lost her brother and a few days after he passed away one flew into the house. Her brother’s name was also Robin.

Whyismycatanasshat · 16/09/2019 19:20

“When robins appear, passed loved ones are near.” Or so saith my elderly aunt. I hope she was right, as we have one who pops down to our window frequently.
I hope it’s her checking up on the baby.

A few years ago Dh, myself and 2 DS’s went to stay at a hotel in the Cheshire countryside. DS1 was driving, and when he parked up and stepped out of the car a robin flew up from the ground and began to ‘attack’ him. As we walked toward the hotel the robin accompanied us, all the time flying up from the ground at DS1.
I thought it may have been protecting young but this was in January so I assume instead it was protecting its territory. It only went after DS1 though, it ignored the rest of us.
It was quite cute Smile
