Savoury on the go breakfast ideas

MrsGrindah · 16/09/2019 12:41

Need some ideas for quick breakfasts that I can eat on the train,
I’m trying to avoid sweet stuff but all the grab and go options seem to be sweet eg yoghurt , cereal bars, fruit

I don’t mind a bit of night before prep . All I can think of is c old hard boiled eggs!

Thanks

I make egg muffin things - bit of smoked salmon (you can use ham) at the bottom of a cup cake tin, crack egg on top, season and bake til egg cooked. Last a few days in the fridge.

MrsGrindah · 16/09/2019 12:57

Thanks. It’s still a cold egg though isn’t it although you could add in other stuff I suppose.

I'd just take sandwiches. Whatever you like, it doesn't have to be classic 'breakfast' but egg mayonnaise works well, but you could have anything you wanted really.

Smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel
Ham and cheese croissant
Savoury wholegrain muffins with seeds/cheese/herbs in (loads of recipes online, bake a joblot and freeze)
Homemade pasties
wholegrain wraps with falafel and hummus

It's another egg recipe but beat a couple of eggs, then add ham or bacon or ingredients that you like. Bake in a muffin tin. Turn it out then you've got individual frittatas.

Cereal in a Tupperware lidded bowl style thing and seperate little bottle of milk, especially if it's insulated

Last night's leftovers, cold (pasta bake, pizza slice, etc)

Croissants and cheese

Carrot and pepper sticks with houmous

deathb4decaf · 16/09/2019 18:12

Savoury scones?

MrsGrindah · 16/09/2019 18:27

Cheese scones good idea. Can ring the changes too .
Houmous and Pitta bread would work.
Going to look at that cheese flapjack idea definitely.

It has to be “ eat in your hand” for me. I can’t bear it watching people eat on a train so I feel the need to do it discreetly !

Sorry meant to say thanks everyone! Those cheese flapjacks look gorgeous!

Assuming it is a busy commuter train I would not take anything smelly like egg and salmon although if it is cold and has been in the fridge it probably won’t be too smelly and they do sell egg mayonnaise sandwiches at stations.

I would make a ham and cheese bagel.

Trewser · 16/09/2019 18:37

Get up earlier and eat at home? Not a possibility? I would do this as i hate eating on the train. Or I'd skip breakfast. Maybe a coffee and an apple if i had to.

ShirleyPhallus · 16/09/2019 18:37

On behalf of all commuters please do not eat eggs or salmon on the train!

Wraps would be my idea but can’t you wait to get to work and enjoy your breakfast?

MrsGrindah · 16/09/2019 18:41

No . I have to get up st 5.30 and don’t get into the office at 9.30 ( this isn’t every day) so I get too hungry .

OP posts:
Nextphonewontbesamsung · 16/09/2019 18:42

I would have a peanut butter and marmite sandwich. But is there really nowhere else to eat other than on the train?

MrsGrindah · 16/09/2019 18:42

Sorry that should say I don’t get into the office till 9.30am.

OP posts:
MrsGrindah · 16/09/2019 18:44

Peanut butter on toast would be excellent!

I can’t face eating at 5.30 and the office I’m going to isn’t mine so I can’t sit and eat at my desk..only just make it on time as it is! I really need breakfast these days! But I hate smelly food etc on trains so do try to be as unobtrusive as possible

OP posts:
Trewser · 16/09/2019 18:46

Yes I'd have a peanut butter sandwich and a banana.

bobstersmum · 16/09/2019 18:47

I would make some homemade sausage rolls or cheese and onion pasties, or I'd cook some bacon or sausage the day before and zap in the microwave and whack on some bread. Failing that walls do those microwave sausages although I've never tried them.

CakeNinja · 16/09/2019 18:50

Well if you hate smelly train food and don’t want to stand out, for the love of god don’t eat anything fish or egg based!!
I don’t know, I don’t really eat breakfast during the week for the same reasons, early start and then straight into work and wait it out til lunch.
At the weekends when I’ve got more time I do eat in the morning but not ‘traditional’ breakfast foods as in toast and eggs or cereal, more often something like a panini. Just take a sandwich or something, no faffing, smell or mess?

PermanentPortakabin · 16/09/2019 18:51

I have recently started having a kefir yoghurt. I like the biotiful ones. That keeps me going most mornings (I have a similar morning schedule - up at 5.30, no opportunity to stop and eat until just after 10, so need an on-the-go option).

On particularly hungry days, I also take a banana.

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 16/09/2019 23:12

Cheese flapjacks?!!! Heck yes!!!

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 16/09/2019 23:17

Yy to the bacon option.

Only id make it the night before with bacon medallions, tomato, lettuce and flatbreads. If you do it with medallions comes in at less than 300 cals.

Ormally · 16/09/2019 23:28

I used to prepare a pitta bread with mozzarella and spinach in it (a few cherry tomato slices if you are a less messy train eater than me, but risk of going right down your front.)
You can make it into what would be a toasted sandwich and then cool and fridge. They can be reheated in the microwave carefully to make the cheese melty again - not as nice as fresh toasting but will work and be warm.
