Would you read Harry Potter again?

Just curious, I would have read them all at least twice but that would be a good few years ago .. maybe 10?

I loved it and still do but it seems maybe childish now?

(Not childish as in reading it, but childish as in the story itself seems child like)

Re reading let's you realise the importance of tiny events throughout the years. I tend to read them when my rl is full of stress.

Love51 · 15/09/2019 22:10

I'm currently reading them for the first time. My almost 8 year old and I started over the summer holidays. We are on the third one. I'm planning to get her the Narnia books for her birthday to distract her for a while as I'm not sure if the later books are suitable (and now reading them together is 'our thing' I can't read ahead of her!)
We are only allowed to watch the movies after we have read the books.
I will probably read them all again after 2 years with the next child.
If I really like them I'll read them to my niece, that seems less hassle than having another child just to share HP with.

Figgygal · 15/09/2019 22:12

Nah they're kids books and not amazing ones at that
I read them all as they came out and never got the fuss

Yes and I am!
Reading Philosophers Stone to me 6yo but it was taking so long so have had to progress and read on!
Love them!

whatswithtodaytoday · 15/09/2019 22:13

I've re-read them many times - never in order, just whichever one I fancy at the time. I've watched the films many times too, and listened to the audiobook a couple. I can't wait to read them to my son when he's older.

But I didn't read them as a child - I was into my teens when the first one came out. They're not childish, they're brilliant for all ages.

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/09/2019 22:18

I really enjoyed the audiobooks last year - it was like experiencing them for the first time again. I suppose I skim read a lot and miss details.

I recently discovered that some friends of mine, and their primary aged child never re-read books. I found that so surprising! Especially as my similarly aged child goes through books so quickly I couldn’t possibly keep up with demand.

Flower777 · 15/09/2019 22:20

I haven’t ever read them or seen any of the films. Don’t plan to either!

TheRLodger · 15/09/2019 22:22

Yes do. I always get a different message or pick up on details which I missed in previous readings

Frangible · 15/09/2019 22:24

I have a seven year old, so I’ve just been through the entire series. Reading them aloud really makes you notice where JKR needed to edit. (AND where Stephen Fry pronounces things weirdly in the audio books. AzkaBAN. MalFOY.)

MadameJosephine · 15/09/2019 22:24

I’m reading them with DD who is nearly 7 at the moment. I haven’t read them since I read them to my DS when he was younger (he’s 23 on Wednesday and I remember queuing outside shops waiting for them to be released!) and I’d forgotten just how great they are! I’d forgotten loads of things that happen in them too so really enjoying them second time around. I very rarely read shook twice and if I hadn’t had another child I’m not sure I would have bothered but I’m glad I did (have the child and read the books Grin)

Well you're not very well-placed to answer the OP then, are you?

I've read them umpteen times and enjoy them just as much every time. I've also read them in several languages, which was fun. It's interesting to see what words they've used in the translations for things like the Hogwarts Houses, magical creatures etc!

Straysocks · 15/09/2019 22:30

I have read them lots of times but never wept over them til reading them to my children. I didn't realise how very much they were about a mother's love, and sacrifice and preparing to let go of what you love most. Is it just me? Loved them as a teen, blubbed as a mother.

ThatCurlyGirl · 15/09/2019 22:32

Yes, again and again as per the last two decades until my Hogwarts letter finally arrives and then I'll start my first year shit hot at magic because I'll know all the spells.

I'm 32.

IT MIGHT HAPPEN YOU DON'T KNOW

Honestly I get a bit jealous of kids starting the books for the first time, they have so much to look forward to!

Bananajuice · 15/09/2019 22:32

I read them every summer then watch the movies lol

Be1atrix · 15/09/2019 22:33

Yes, me and DW are currently working our way through the audiobooks. It's great, there's tons of bits I'd forgotten that aren't in the movies.

Chloemol · 15/09/2019 22:35

Yes i re read them every 18 months or so

AmateurSwami · 15/09/2019 22:36

Absofuckinglutely

TheCanterburyWhales · 15/09/2019 22:38

I'm due for my every-two-yeae reread. I sometimes skip Goblet because I hate it. (DD and I are at Phoenix film on our annual rewatch. She forced me into watching Goblet this year but I played on my phone for much of it)

I shan't be getting involved with any new stuff about Fantastic Beasts or Cursed children though. JK should have learned from BBC sitcom writers- pull the plug on something when you're at the top of your game. Clinging on in not so quiet desperation (no matter how lovely a person you are) is unseemly.

Pinkbonbon · 15/09/2019 22:41

I re-read the first three a couple of years back. I think I may read them again in another 5-10 years.

Cherrysoup · 15/09/2019 23:46

I am, but in French this time. 🇫🇷

KatherineJaneway · 15/09/2019 23:50

I reread them every so often

PickAChew · 16/09/2019 00:15

No but I don't read anything more than once.

@Frangible - I'm glad you said that about SF because I get annoyed with his pronunciation and thought it was just me. I listen to them when I'm running which means it doesn't matter if I switch off as I know the stories so well, but am often brought back by the way he's said something. It's not just the Potterisms - there was something like sofa where he put the stress in the wrong place which really annoyed me.

Crockof · 16/09/2019 18:13

@10Love51 completely agree, we have spaced out the books so DC is reading the last one and is about to turn 11. They are a bit dark, and the books grow with the child, the themes are more complex. We read other books in between and when a book is finished have a HP film marathon over a wet weekend where we watch them all from the beginning.
