Working a Monday or Friday- which is best?

KingCatMeowInSpace · 15/09/2019 19:08

Following on from a similar thread, I'm upping my days at work from 3 days to 4 days. I currently work a Tues, Wed and Thurs. Is there any benefits I should think about in making my extra day a Monday or a Friday or makes no difference which day?

I would always have Fridays off mainly because most of my friends are pt but we all have Fridays off so good for catching up. Hairdressers etc are open. School does a lot of activities on Friday that includes parents eg sports day, reading, assemblies, trips. School often closes early around holidays on Fridays & I can get packed/ready in the morning & we can go away as soon as I collect the kids. Makes the weekend longer for me.

Ridiclious · 15/09/2019 23:26

I upped my hours and now work Fridays but I do it from home because my whole team works remotely on Fridays. So I can do the washing, tidy the house etc in my commuting time/lunch break. Love not working Mondays. Never get the Sunday night feeling either. Not even on a Monday.

sweetkitty · 15/09/2019 23:26

I work Mon-Thurs and like it. Long weekend every week, DC school always has stuff on on a Friday too, I get organised for the weekend and it’s nice to have a break.

ChippyMinton · 15/09/2019 23:27

Is your commute different on Monday/Friday?

Fridays can be a lot quieter, which makes for shorter journey times.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/09/2019 04:28

Our office has cake Fridays so I'd definitely not want to miss that.

I have a vague long term plan to drop to 4 days when my mortgage is paid off as a 'taper to retirement' thing and I think I'm going to have either Monday or Wednesday off. Wednesday is good as you never have to go to work more than 2 days in a row.

LoreleiRock · 16/09/2019 05:08

I only work four day weeks, and I prefer working on Fridays. This may be to do with an old boss implementing whiskey fridays. I don’t work for him anymore, but we still do cheese Fridays (with wine on special occasions)

TrainQuestions · 16/09/2019 05:44

I take Fridays off as there's no after-school club on Fridays and they finish at lunch time.

BikeRunSki · 16/09/2019 07:09

I did same as the OP and picked up Fridays as my extra day. Everyone is always in a much better mood on Fridays than Mondays and it’s the day people are most likely to take off. And the BH thing usually works in my favour, although next year May Day Monday had been moved to the previous Friday.Angry

BarbarAnna · 16/09/2019 07:56

@BackforGood I don’t think that’s how it works in my organisation. You only need to take the hours off your allowance for the hours you would normally work on that day. So if you usually work 6 hours on a Monday and the Bank Holiday falls on a Monday, then you need to use 6 hours of your allowance.

berlinbabylon · 16/09/2019 08:00

Take Mondays off. "Nobody" works Fridays and so everywhere is really busy, except public transport into work.

ReginaGeorgeous · 16/09/2019 08:00

I work Monday to Wednesday and love my working pattern. My office is signifanctly busier at the end of the week as I'm in banking and most property completions take place on a Friday.

I get pro rated hours added to my entitlement to cover bank holidays. I can choose to either use holiday for a bank hol, or I can swap my days that week. I usually work a Thursday instead.

eeksville · 16/09/2019 08:23

I think it also depends on what your actual role entails. Mine involves managing/organising people. i find everyone much more enthusiastic & productive on Monday which makes it easier for me as when you're pt it can be hard to catch people.

C0untDucku1a · 16/09/2019 08:25

I dont work
Mondays. It has revolutionised how i feel
About But i dont get the bank hols so work extra days than ft staff. Frustrating.

AnneElliott · 16/09/2019 09:28

I'd go for having Mondays off. Friday's are relaxed at our place with people allowed to wear jeans and no Ministers!

BarbaraofSeville · 16/09/2019 09:38

count

The bank holidays should be accounted for in your annual leave or hours or some way anyway or else it is illegal discrimination against part time workers as you are either working time you aren't paid for or missing out on leave. You should be paid 80% of the full time salary for your role and receive 80% of the leave entitlement including bank holidays. Talk to HR, your union or ACAS to check it is being calculated correctly.

Ellmau · 16/09/2019 11:28

Which also means that if you youdon’t normally work Mondya you may needtomke up some time time to account for bank holidays.

Mummyshark2018 · 16/09/2019 11:36

Definitely Monday's off. No dreaded Sunday night feeling and allows you to ease into the week slowly. Fridays at work means people are generally in a better mood. In my area traffic is significantly lighter on a Friday so less time commuting.

Fizzypoo · 16/09/2019 11:39

Having mondays off works best for me. I like cleaning up after the weekend and having space.

ExpletiveDelighted · 16/09/2019 11:45

I've done both and vastly prefer having Friday off, which is what I do now. I used to hate walking into the office on Tuesday and playing catch up with my colleagues, missing all the Monday what did you do at the weekend chat at lunchtime etc. Far more stuff at my DCs schools happens on Fridays than Mondays, much easier when going away for the weekend and lots of my friends are off on Fridays so they're good for meeting up. I'd never switch back to Mondays off.

C0untDucku1a · 16/09/2019 12:16

@BarbaraofSeville ive apoken to hr and payroll. Both say something different. But both outcome was the same. Tough. Union is a waste of time.

ForalltheSaints · 16/09/2019 13:09

I have gone from 5 to 4 days. I have Monday off, my choice. Weekends away are much easier as trains/planes more frequent on a Monday evening than a Sunday. Easier to arrange tradespeople if needed, or appointments at dentists, bank, other domestic 'admin'.

Fewer work meetings have had to be rearranged for my attendance than if I was off on a Friday.

KingCatMeowInSpace · 16/09/2019 14:00

Loving the sound of those of you who have cake and cheese Fridays! Lots to consider -thanks everyone for your help - I've decided I'd prefer Mondays off- gonna speak to my boss about it next week and see what they say- let you know - fingers crossed x

Tried to post earlier but this website is a piece of shit when you use the mobile site (adverts make posting impossible)

I used to work Wed-Fri but found it hard to get everything ready for Monday (2 school age kids so lots of uniform to wash and iron!).

I switched to Mon-Weds at the request of work but its made home life much easier. Granted people aren't quite as cheerful on a Monday as they are on a Friday but I can live with that.

I still get Bank Holidays that don't fall on my working days pro-rated but I get the BH Monday's off.

ginrummy1 · 16/09/2019 15:41

Work the Friday.
I work part-time so work at the beginning of the week but when I've swapped shifts the atmosphere on a Friday is much nicer, everyone seems much more upbeat.
Also you don't need to eat into your weekend doing the "Sunday" stuff. You have the house to yourself on Monday to do all of it

KingCatMeowInSpace · 26/09/2019 22:22

Finally heard back from Boss today to say that I can work the Friday - very pleased! X
