Mirrors is this weird?

We're a household of 7. Myself,dp 3 teens (14,16,17) and two little ones 5 & 2.

There is 1 full length mirror by the front door and my 2 teen DD's have a light up make up mirror each on their dressing table. There is no mirrors anywhere else not even in the bathroom. Would you say that's weird? My mum reckons it is Confused

He very rarely shaves tbh and I'd much rather he done it in the garden anyway. The mess is horrendous.

Your husband shaves in the garden all year round because you don't like the mess.

I've got to advise you that that is weirder than having no mirrors in the bathroom. Which in itself is highly unusual.

Fluffsmum · 17/09/2019 14:08

oldenoughtobehavebetter I absolutely cannot watch myself brushing my teeth, it makes me heave! I have perfect teeth.

I'd prefer not to have one in the bathroom to be honest, but DH insists.

Fraggling I'm assuming OPs husband has a full beard only needing occasional trimming.

RavenLG · 17/09/2019 14:12

Nope I agree. It’s weird.
DP has a good ol beard and trims in the bathrooms. Yeah it’s a bit messy but nothing a bib beard (that stick to the mirror to catch the hairs) and a hoover won’t sort out.
Couldn’t even fathom him doing it in the garden without a mirror though, does it not end up lopsided?

fantasmasgoria1 · 17/09/2019 14:17

There is a big mirror above the fireplace, one above the bathroom sink, 3 small ones on the bathroom cabinet doors, we have 3 long ones on the wardrobe doors, a slim long one in the hall and I have a light up make up mirror. Most houses I have been in have several.

whocanbebothered · 17/09/2019 15:00

I have a mirror in each room besides the kitchen. It's less of a vanity thing and more about making the spaces look larger, which I always find mirrors do as theyobviouslyreflect the light. If you did decide to add another couple of mirrors, purely as a décor feature, you may notice your spaces feeling larger and brighter.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 17/09/2019 15:53

I would find it strange to not have a mirror in the bathroom as I like to see what I’m doing when I wash my make up off.

We have large mirrors in both bathrooms (I do my makeup using the bathroom mirror), a small mirror on my chest of drawers, a full length mirror inside my wardrobe door, DS and DD each have full length mirrors in their rooms, there is a fill length mirror near the front door.

That’s 7 mirrors for four of us...

Anothernotherone · 17/09/2019 16:00

I'm in my late 40s and have never had a filling nor any other problems with my teeth and don't watch myself brush my teeth in a mirror - I don't believe looking in a mirror would improve teeth brushing, given you can't see the backs or many parts of the inside of your mouth in the mirror!

We don't have many mirrors but have one over each bathroom sink and one in the hall, and DD has one in her room.

Shaving in the garden every time is weird, but I suppose if he doesn't often shave anyway... Does he just skip it if it's bad weather?

BenWillbondsPants · 17/09/2019 16:06

Not weird, but unusual, particularly in the bathroom.

I do think that most adults are able to clean their teeth properly without the aid of a mirror though. If they can't, I find that odd.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 17/09/2019 16:10

OK, mirror audit:
Large one over the mantelpiece
Small one in the hall
Mirrored cabinets in both bathrooms
Three-sided dressing table mirror in our room
Full-length mirror in DD’s room (there when we moved in)
Full-length mirror in spare room (currently DP’s office, also there when we moved in)
Mirror inside wardrobe.

So, 8 mirrors for the three of us, and it never feels like quite enough/in the right places.

confusedofengland · 17/09/2019 16:12

We don't have a mirror in the bathroom - yet. We ripped out the old bathroom including a wall of mirrored tiles a couple if years ago & haven't got round to replacing. DH does have a portable shaving mirror in the shower though. I do/take off make-up in my dressing area & have a mirror there. Then one by front door, 1 in lounge, 1 in dining room, 1 in downstairs loo. 1 in our main bedroom area. Works fine for us.

FatherFintanFay · 17/09/2019 17:32

I've got one full-length one in the bedroom, and a hand mirror that I take over to the window when I need some natural light (usually for doing eyebrows), but that's it. I don't wear makeup so I don't need one in the bathroom, and why would I need a mirror in the living room anyway? I hate looking at myself but I acknowledge that the bedroom mirror is necessary to check that my outfit is working!

RedRec · 17/09/2019 17:36

It seems odd to me to not have a mirror in the bathroom but who the hell are all these people who need to be looking at themselves while brushing their teeth?!

CakeNinja · 17/09/2019 17:48

We’ve got a little one over the sink in the bathroom which is really mirrored doors of the cabinet. Dp uses it for shaving. I can’t say I’ve ever watched myself clean my teeth!
Dds have a big mirror in their bathroom and floorlength ones in their bedrooms.
Also a big one in the downstairs loo. One in the hallway. And we are just about to put one in the bedroom - I hate mirrors in the bedroom and don’t need one to get ready or straighten my hair etc. But it will finish off the room nicely so we’ve bought one.
I do think it’s odd not to have one in the bathroom though.

SayrraT · 17/09/2019 19:09

We have 1 full length in the bedroom and one small round in the bathroom.

My partner also shaves in the garden (his choice).

I don't think it's odd.

wanderings · 18/09/2019 08:49

I wouldn't want to look in the mirror to brush my teeth: it's not a pretty sight. It reminds me of some adverts in about 2003 about camera phones: full-size hoarding of a close-up of a young girl brushing her teeth, with lashings of toothpaste. Ugh! Also, when I had braces, my mum liked to peer into my mouth to look at them, and she had this annoying habit of setting her own mouth in the same position (saying she couldn't help it), so I'd see her fillings and everything. Shudder.
