Climate change strikes

Am I the only person who finds the climate change emergency strikes a bit off?
Not teens who really want to go.
But in my area people take their 4 and 5 year olds and my slightly older child has been awake at night crying that if governments don't make changes now the whole world will end in 12 years' time - obviously slightly muddled message from kids who have attended.
Don't get me wrong I am fully aware that we need to take action on climate change. But it feels wrong to me to weaponise young children who don't and shouldn't really understand the issues involved.

Virtue signalling idiots fooled by nonsense.

Abstractedobstructed · 15/09/2019 17:43

Ha, Soola, don't pull any punches!

I don't think the fundamental issue is nonsense. Clearly climate change is of great concern. But this particular approach seems a bit hysterical and bandwagon ish.

Maybe they don't have anyone to look after their little ones?

No, the marches and strikes are specifically school strikes and it's supposed to be the children marching. Which I guess is fair enough for 16 year old Greta Thornburg who has informed herself and made a decision, and other teens have agreed with her and decided to go along. But in the case I am talking about it's primary age kids whose parents are deciding on their behalf.

What Soola said.

With bells on.

Soola · 15/09/2019 18:01

@UrsulaPandress thank you.

clearsommespace · 15/09/2019 18:09

Abstracted Fair enough.

I'm not in the UK and apart from the big Friday march (back in March?), all the climate protests in my city have been taking place on weekends.

DD is 10 and she took me to one.

Totally her decision, I was just there to support her. I'm proud she's trying to make a stand and get voices heard. No virtue signaling from us thank you.

Abstractedobstructed · 15/09/2019 18:31

where is where did she hear about it? Does she have a good understanding of the issues? I feel like primary school kids should be climbing trees and playing tig and not being told they have 12 years to save the world. It's not fair to make them feel responsibility for changing adult behaviour.
Don't you think someone is weaponising our kids?

She heard about it on the news.

She has very strong views of her own, became vegetarian several years ago in a family of big meat eaters, has campaigned at school to change their ways with single use plastic etc, all off her own back.

She researches and makes presentations and picks litter up on every walk or day at the beach.

She spends plenty of time playing, dancing, at guides and gymnastics and generally being 10. She just cares about the environment, animals and her future.

Her ambition is to be "an activist or the Prime Minister"

wheresmyhairytoe · 15/09/2019 18:41

She has actually made us change our ways. We now eat much less meat and use reusable products rather than single use.

I'm not sure. Maybe this time the issue is so serious that we can't really protect children from it anymore? I mean in some places people literally can't protect their children from drought, famine, hurricanes and you name it caused by climate change so it doesn't seem necessarily inappropriate to me that we are all at least honest and open about how serious it is. My DD is just a baby but I'm worried about the future for her and I do think a lot about what I can do prepare her for it, with both practical skills and emotional resilience. I know what you mean though. I'm just not sure what's right these days!
