Car tax question: can anyone help?

PinkRobots · 15/09/2019 14:13

On Friday I bought a new car from a dealer. I insured the car Friday night.

The government website says that the car is taxed until November. This is under the previous owner obviously. The man said he would apply to have this changed Friday night. The website says this changeover can take up to 5 days.

In the meantime, can I drive the car? It is insured to me, but not taxed to me.

Thank you for any help Smile

You have to tax it yourself, I thought, using the reference number on the new keeper part of the green slip.

PinkRobots · 15/09/2019 14:20

Yes, I know I have to tax it myself, but the vehicle is still in the previous owners name. He has to tell them he has sold it (which he says he has), and I can’t tax it until the system updates.

But can I drive the car in the meantime?

You can't drive the car until you tax it.

You should have the green 'new keeper' slip (part of the V5 log book) and you can use that to tax the car whilst he does his bit from his side.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 15/09/2019 14:26

Oh, I've just realised you bought from a dealer, sorry. Do you mean he's taxing the car for you?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 15/09/2019 14:28

You can tax it straight away using the part of the v5 you should have been given. Then you can drive it. Although you probably have already so makes it a pointless q really...

GiantKitten · 15/09/2019 14:29

DS1 took over DD2’s car & was able to tax it immediately by changing keeper details his end, even though we hadn’t changed it our end (we found this out later when a bus lane fine came through addressed to DD2)

So you can register as keeper & tax it right away, but make sure the seller changes it too.

coconuttelegraph · 15/09/2019 14:31

Have you got your part of the V5?

Go online and register the change of owner and tax the car

Suebnm · 15/09/2019 14:31

If the car is insured you simply tax it online with the new keepers document ref number. You don't need the car to have changed owners to you.

If you haven't taxed the car for whatever reason you cannot drive it.

Fatted · 15/09/2019 14:32

Your can tax it immediately with the green slip. Don't know if you can do it online or if you have to physically do it at the post office.

You also need to get it taxed now even if it's 'off the road' so you're still committing an offence not having it taxed whether or drive it or not.

www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax

It looks like you can still tax it yourself even if it's in the previous owner name.

PinkRobots · 15/09/2019 14:51

Yes, I have the green slip.

I have tried several times to tax it, but it won’t let me? It says it’s taxed to someone else.

Surely if it was possible to tax someone else’s car, that would cause problems? Anyone could just tax anyone else’s car?

When you go in the online system you should click that yoy don't have the v11 then select the option that you have the new keeper v5c it should then cancel their tax and let you tax it.

Totaldogsbody · 15/09/2019 15:17

I think you can go online and fill the V10 new keeper form then you should be able to tax it online if not you can do this at the Post Office.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 15/09/2019 15:19

When I got my car the salesman came with me to a post office to tax it so I could drive it straight home.

lyingwanker · 15/09/2019 15:22

The police told me you've got up to 10 days to tax a newly bought car when they stopped us because our car was showing as untaxed (we'd bought it on the Saturday and taxed/insured it but it wasn't showing on the database on the Sunday when they stopped us)

Totaldogsbody · 15/09/2019 15:23

Sorry I mean the V5 you can fill the V10 at the post office

PinkRobots · 15/09/2019 15:32

Okay, it’s now saying that my document reference number is wrong?

My ref number is only 11 digits? But they’re saying it needs to be 12?

It’s an old car if that makes any difference?

You’ll have to go to the post office to do it, I had to when I had an 11 digit ref number

Car tax question: can anyone help?
Celticrose · 15/09/2019 18:23

My husband bought a car Sat morning. I drove it home under my insurance which allows me to drive another car with the owners permission. We then went in my car to have the car insured. Having the insurance and mot cert we went to the post office with the V5 form with appropriate part completed and were able to tax the car.

Dadof21 · 15/09/2019 18:41

You cannot drive the car without tax. You will HAVE to tax at a Post Office able to carry this out. You will need your insurance, your current Mot certificate and the green New Keeper slip
Then and ONLY then will you LEGALLY be allowed to drive your car.
And a Word of caution!? 😂. Tell the DEALER!! He needs to learn about taxing cars under the new legislation!!! Only a lifetime out of date!

Good Lick! 😂 😂 😂.

Chris. 👍

PinkRobots · 15/09/2019 20:11

Okay, great.

I have my MOT and green slip. I have insurance, but not printed out? How can I prove my car is insured?
