Haircut always go wrong

Whenever I go to the hairdresser my hair is usually a few inches past my shoulders. I always ask for just a trim off the length and long layers put back in.

I always come out the salon with my hair above my shoulders and lots of layers which make my head look like a mushroom!

I don't understand why this always happens. The first time I had it cut by a trainee in a 'posh' salon, the second time by a stylist in a different salon, and more recently by a hairdresser in the cheapest salon local to me. They all left my hair looking the same.

For those of you with layered hair past your shoulders, can you please tell me what you ask for to get that look? I know it sounds simple but I must be saying something wrong for this to keep happening.

I have short hair but explain what I hate / dislike with photos. Since I’ve been doing that it seems to have helped - so maybe give that a try?

It might be the description of “long layers” which I have always understood to mean a long distance between the layers.
Maybe just take a picture in.

I had this too!

I realised the connection was that all of the hairdressers had short hair and didn’t get the whole “only an inch off please”.
I decided I needed to find a hairdresser with long hair- which I did in Tony &Guy. In fact most of the women who work there have long hair- I’ve been very happy there for about a year!

I found that spelling out clearly what I wanted rather than trying to speak 'hairdresser' worked.
So rather than give an amount to trim you could say I'd like to trim the ends for a tidy up but I want the length to stay below my shoulders.

I have long hair and have found no layers stops the mushroom look. I now say a blunt trim? Could that help?

MidnightMystery · 14/09/2019 21:13

Start by saying , "I do not want the mushroom look, but what I would like is XYZ"

BrieAndChilli · 14/09/2019 21:15

What is your hair like?
I have very wavy, sometimes curly hair and I found it always mushroomed out.
My present hairdresser really understands that curly hair layers need cutting differently to straight hair and it’s really made a difference.

I was always disappointed too until I started visiting Indian / Arab hairdressers. They tend to be more experienced working with longer hair / cutting layers into longer hair / dry cuts etc and often due to footfall tend to be cheaper too.

I'd say stay away from layers.

I've had my hair cut today. It's a blunt, just below shoulder length style with absolutely no faffing.
One of the best cuts I've had in ages!

My stylist told me that people are tending to steer clear of layers now because of the puffy, mushroom look that they can result in.

Also, look for small salons that show client before and after pictures so you can see the work they do.

I find that screenshots of hairstyles from somewhere like Pinterest can really help me describe what I want too.
Length is subjective in hairstyles. Your 'just a trim' could be another's 'lob it all off and start again.'
