A mouse! Do ultrasonic things work to deter them?

I just let the dog out and saw a mouse in our hall - they are in the kitchen too!

I absolutely hate dealing with mice and already have two humane traps out as we live in the countryside but haven’t caught anything .

Does anyone have any advice what to do now they are there?!

I know traps work but I wondered if can avoid them without the problem getting worse

IME no they don't work. We used to live in an old cottage with a mouse problem. I walked in one day and there was a mouse happily sniffing at the ultrasonic device.

The best thing to get rid of them are old fashioned traps with peanut butter on. We also put down Eradibait under the floorboards. It's safe for children and pets and won't affect owls etc if they eat a mouse that's been poisoned by it.

Are they dormice? When we lived in the country we would get them coming in when the weather cooled down. They don't infest homes. They are often tan/brown with white and have a shorter tail. We had house mice in London and another city, never in the country. They are more mouse like and no...ultrasound things didn't work. The only way to get them to move on is to make all your food completely sealed (cereal in plastic, sealed containers, bread in the fridge etc) and make sure you wipe down all the surfaces and vacuum/sweep the kitchen everyday. Having no food sources will make them move on and only that.

Ultrasonic not ultrasound Grin

playftseforme · 14/09/2019 04:06

I agree with the PP, ultrasonic devices are totally ineffective for rodents

Thank you as you’ve saved me unnecessary spending if it doesn’t work!
I do hate traps and once had a mouse that wasn’t killed outright and it still haunts me that I didn’t have the guts to put it out of misery somehow so let it hop away injured.

Thank you for telling me about Eradibait! I hadn’t heard of it

I don’t think they are dormice, it had a long tail

In my loft I have a device that is an ultrasonic repellant, but it also has a motion detector that sets off a strobe light and bird of prey noises. It is very effective, but I'm not sure if it would be useful in heavily trafficked areas.

Can you get a female cat?.

How do you think they are getting in?.

EveningLight · 14/09/2019 08:44

We can’t get a cat. But it’s a good point how they get in? the door looks closely fitted so I really don’t know.

Any gaps around waste pipes? They can get into gaps that are tiny. If you stuff gaps with wire wool that stops them.

We had them when we lived rurally but the cat killed them.

I will do an outdoor inspection when I can, thank you . I find it frustrating having so many other flats nearby as our building refused to treat everyone in one go and it seems a bit like nits at school, unless everyone works together and receives a letter when nits have been found it is so easy for mice to just reappear soon after expensive pest control visits

Sorry that was re london as they appear in our flat there too - I am feeling moused-out
