Washing machine in bathroom ?

Gamble66 · 12/09/2019 20:57

I'm having my bathroom refitted and having the washing machine and tumble dryer plumbed in upstairs as I just think it's so much more convenient. Friend thinks I'm bonkers.
What 'mad' house things have you done that work for you ?

I think that's a smart idea. I'd loved to have the washer and dryer room upstairs.

FamilyOfAliens · 12/09/2019 21:02

We have our washing machine in the bathroom. Our kitchen is so small I can touch all the work surfaces when I stand in the middle and we had a choice to have either the washing machine or the dishwasher in there.

Our bathroom is downstairs though. And it never seemed weird to me because when we lived in Germany everyone had their washing machine in the bathroom. It actually seems weird to me to have it in a room where you cook (and sometimes eat).

MerryDeath · 12/09/2019 21:02

much better than putting them in a kitchen. whose bright idea was that Confused

catwithflowers · 12/09/2019 21:03

It’s the norm in many European countries 😊

FamilyOfAliens · 12/09/2019 21:03

We also have non-perishable food in a cupboard in the dining room - again, because the kitchen is so small.

FamilyOfAliens · 12/09/2019 21:03

But that’s just us I think Grin

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 12/09/2019 21:04

Very common in flats in Germany.
I think it’s very practical. I have seen a house here that had a fitted cupboard in the bathroom with both washing machine and tumble dryer tucked in and shelves above for laundry baskets and washing powder. I thought it was brilliant.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 12/09/2019 21:05

yes, I really do not like washing machines in kitchens...yicky!

It's only a nuisance to have them in the bathroom if it's upstairs and you like to hang washing out a lot, but if you are happy to tumble dry then that makes no difference.

I have mine across the courtyard in the old washhouse, so that is a bit of a palaver through the house with baskets of laundry, but I am very lazy so the exercise helps. :o

DramaAlpaca · 12/09/2019 21:06

My friend has hers upstairs in the bathroom. I think it's genius & wish I'd done the same.

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 12/09/2019 21:13

When I lived in France as an Aupair back in the early 80's , everyone had a washing machine either in the bathroom or cellar.

I remember thinking blimey how logical and more hygienic, but sadly many years on I'm stuck with my washer in the kitchen, no utility room or cellar.

saffy1234 · 12/09/2019 21:15

Germans have their washing machines in their bathrooms and it actually makes more sense!

Amberheartkitty · 12/09/2019 21:16

I wanted this so badly but bathroom was too small. Makes much more sense to me.

SingingSands · 12/09/2019 21:19

I just can't get my head round it, (and we have plenty of relatives in Germany who have this).

I don't know why I can't accept it. Maybe the thought of unloading the washing then having to carry it downstairs and through the house to hang it out? Maybe because I had my bathroom redone last year and I'm so precious over it I can't imagine putting a washer in there!

Hecateh · 12/09/2019 21:22

I've just built my own house and have put the washer and dryer in the bathroom/dressing room. I planned it that way from the start and have had very mixed reactions - but after the initial reaction most people have agreed it's a brilliant idea. The only person that keeps maintaining it's crackers is my adult son. Of course he rarely does any washing as his SAHP does it.

Anothernotherone · 12/09/2019 21:24

It's not mad at all! If you don,'t have a utility room or laundry celler then as everyone says the bathroom is a far better idea than the kitchen!

My washing machine and dryer are in the basement, I'd rather have them almost anywhere than the kitchen (with the exception of the living room Grin) It's actually a really strange idea to put the laundry in the kitchen if you think about it - I assume it started when the only water pipes coming into the house were to the kitchen and toilets were still outside ...

Rachelover60 · 12/09/2019 21:28

I think it is a very good idea. I'd quite like that myself though I do have a laundry area downstairs on the way in to the kitchen. Still, washing machine and drier in bathroom is good. Well done.

CassianAndor · 12/09/2019 21:28

I’ve seen this a few times and it’s something I irrationally hate. I think I associate it with cheap studentish housing with everything crammed in every which way.

Also, I assume you never line dry? Why not? I can’t imagine dragging a load of wet washing downstairs to hang it out.

mamaca · 12/09/2019 21:32

It's not mad at all! Totally the norm in Italian houses too

BadBehaviour · 12/09/2019 21:37

You crazy horse! Bought a large corner group sofa wouldn’t fit in my living room, was just about to cut it in half....I know crazy! Then DH came home & went mad! Just to add I didn’t do it. Very nearly though Blush

TheresWaldo · 12/09/2019 21:39

My last house had an upstairs laundry room. It wasn't large but I loved it. Enough for dirty laundry hamper, washer, drier and ironing board, which permanently stayed up. Now everything is in the cellar, which is a pain in the arse. 2 flights of stairs to carry everything up and down. It makes perfect sense to have them in the bathroom vs the kitchen if there is room.

Baldilockss · 12/09/2019 21:41

I had mine in the bathroom upstairs before we moved; I barely hung anything outside (I really don’t trust the weather in this country) so I got sick of walking clothes downstairs just to take them back up a couple of hours later. People judged my decision but I loved it. Do it do it do it.

Baldilockss · 12/09/2019 21:43

Oh and to add, DH built me a cupboard to go around the two appliances so you couldn’t see it. Plus my bathroom was big enough to handle it. Not crammed in at all as PP said.

RavenLG · 12/09/2019 21:47

Yeah don't people think we're mad for having them in the kitchen. I've only ever lived in one house where they would fit in the bathroom to be honest. We had our washing machine in the outhouse in student digs too, it was awful. I used the laundrette instead as it was so cobwebby I couldn't bear it!

Wouldn't it make loads of noise upstairs though, on the floorboards?

theconstantinoplegardener · 12/09/2019 21:48

I like washing machines in utility rooms ideally. It would annoy me if I wanted to put a wash on/get clean laundry out to hang out and somebody was occupying the bathroom so I had to wait. Also, don't you need a massive bathroom? Not just to physically fit the washing machine into, but to comply with the regulations about electrical appliances and splash zones?

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 12/09/2019 21:52

The beautiful ( architect designed) house I worked in as a nanny had the washing machine and drier in the bathroom. I think it makes sense. Great idea.
