I have a fuckton of apples

I know I should be tidy and post in food/recipes but the traffic there is dead slow

I've got two full trees of apples. 1 cooker and 1 eater. I've dedicated this weekend to cook everything apple related that can go in the freezer. So far on my list I have

Filling for apple pie/crumble
Apple sauce
Apple butter (looks lush)
Some sort of apple and something chutney?

Obvs dishing them out to neighbours etc

We're having baked apples for pud tonight

TIA 🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏🍎

Have you got a riding school or stables near you? They would appreciate some of the manky ones you don’t want to use. The horses will enjoy them.

But please DON’T give them to horses over the fence as they may be on special diets.

Pop them in a bag and hand the, to someone at the yard.

I’ve just been given a bag of bruised apples and pears for my horse and she and her companions are loving them.

HolidayHelper · 12/09/2019 18:28

Sell them in paper bags at your front gate? We do that, make about £50 a year for charity.

BoogieFeet · 12/09/2019 18:33

Sorry, nothing useful to add, but would like to propose that ‘fuckton’ be made an official measurement ASAP. Grin

You can store them, depending on variety - cardboard boxes (ideally apple boxes from the greengrocers, if you’re very lucky), layers of newspaper, don’t store any with bruises or signs of insect damage, keep cool, check regularly. We had apples until March one particularly good year.

AwkwardSquad · 12/09/2019 18:35

And you can make this cake, it’s delicious: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2016/oct/13/how-to-cook-the-perfect-dorset-apple-cake

I peel the apples (personal preference) and top it with apple slices.

AwkwardSquad · 12/09/2019 18:37

Nigella’s quick apple chutney is good - nice and easy. You don’t get as many jars-full as the recipe says, though.

CoraPirbright · 12/09/2019 18:57

Ah ha! AwkwardSquad beat me to it - Nigella’s ‘spiced apple chutney’ is heavenly and easy peasy to make (even I can do it Grin)

Lucky you - my previously super productive apple tree has gone on strike this year! Not one in sight! Is this A Thing?

Thankfully the pear tree has done the business and is groaning with fruit!

writersbeenblocked · 12/09/2019 18:59

Dorset Apple Cake, definitely

TheNestedIf · 12/09/2019 19:02

Apple Wine.

There's a small initial outlay for equipment but then you can make all the wine/mead you like (and you will like) out of all sorts of stuff.

Since you have a ready source of fruit you can make bottles of wine up to a head-shattering 19% abv for less than £1 per bottle (given Brexit, a skill I feel everyone should have). Even if you buy fruit, I've never managed to top £4 per bottle.

If you, or anyone else. fancies it, I can post a list of equipment and a recipe. It's a bit long so I won't clog up the thread otherwise.

RezCowgirl · 12/09/2019 19:02

Make a DIY press with a car jack and make juice and/or cider.

dancingmom · 12/09/2019 19:06

We also have a fuckton of apples and no child will eat any apple related recipe. Not even crumble. And my husband hates chutney. And I'm on a diet. The WASTE.

RaspberryBlonde · 12/09/2019 19:09

We have a farm near us that juices them. It’s cheaper than nice juice in the supermarket and keeps for a year. Might be worth looking if there’s something similar near you?

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 12/09/2019 19:17

Lots of small cider producers will swap you apples for some finished cider - google small cider makers or groups in your area and see if they'll do the same

CustardCreamLover · 12/09/2019 19:19

@TheNestedIf yes please!! I made apple wine once but it was horrendous so I need to try something different!

ArtichokeAardvark · 12/09/2019 19:19

Another vote for juicing them. I don't know where you live but if you are near Wiltshire there's a place that will juice any apples you bring them and then airtight bottle it for you so it lasts longer than a few days.

If that's no good, then a favourite family recipe here is 'Orchard Roast' - roast sausages, apple quarters, a whole bulb of garlic and red onion quarters together in the oven, drizzling a marinade of maple syrup and grainy mustard over the top halfway through cooking. Delish.

swissmilk · 12/09/2019 19:24

I take mine into work, in little bags so they are easy for colleagues to take home.
During the year I get back courgettes, cucumbers and cake.

actiongirl1978 · 12/09/2019 19:25

We had an orchard at our old house. I used to bag them up - fill an old style supermarket carrier, and put as many bags as possible at our gate. Free to a good home. I used to hope that someone who was stuck for cash or food that week might have had a tasty treat for free.

Frith2013 · 12/09/2019 19:26

Make some cider? You don’t need cider apples.

Apples baked with mincemeat in the middle.

actiongirl1978 · 12/09/2019 19:26

Also there's an amazing Mary berry recipe for an apple cake that almost goes like caramel when it's cold and reheated..

AwkwardSquad · 12/09/2019 19:26

Got quite pissed on homemade apple wine one night many many years ago. I have NEVER had such a hangover before or since. It was evil.

managedmis · 12/09/2019 19:28

Apple crisp, like crumble but better :

managedmis · 12/09/2019 19:28

Why don't I live next to action girl?!

escapade1234 · 12/09/2019 19:33

We have an apple tree. Every sodding apple falls to the ground pre-chewed by pigeons and squirrels. Then the damn wasps feast on the remains.

Picking them up is a vile job. Hundreds of them, all rotten.

GivemeGinandTonic · 12/09/2019 19:39

Fellow apple tree owner here (first year new house!) and same issues re all falling on the ground then getting attacked quickly !
Are there ways people get many of the apples down, and therefore able to use more of them?
