Anyone know what this pipe in kitchen would be?!

Sorry for the very dull question but am hoping someone on here might have some plumbing expertise!!

Would I have to get a plumber in to tell what it is or is it identifiable from the photo? I am completely clueless.

We have rats and trying to block up all gaps......and there are paw prints on the inside of the pipe! Sad

I can see the photos - is it a vent pipe? I think we have a similar one under the utility sink, the boiler and or/washing machine is connected to a similar pipe.

Can you block it up a bit with wire wool?

It’s a spider/rat/snake private entrance.

Block it up.

Take the picture to a plumber's and ask for a Stop End (whatever that is.)

DH has given you this valuable advice BTW.

A drainage pipe previously connected to a sink, or appliance, is my guess.
Block that open end.
Where does the narrow, upward pipe go?

My Mum had rats. They got in through the toilet soil pipe, ended up in cavity walls and loft (not trying to worry you). She got a pest control chap out. He was brilliant and worked out the source of entry, so if you do have ongoing problems contact one.

Not sure what the pipes is for, but you could check if it's in current use by getting someone to run source of water in your house and listen for water coming down. Is the end, wider? If so, just wondering if it's from an old soil pipe (they can be very narrow in older houses).

It's an outlet pipe for a dishwasher or washing machine or other sink. You can get caps for the end. Take a photo in to screw fix. It'll cost a couple of quid.

longearedbat · 12/09/2019 11:33

Yes, block it off, then you won't have rats!

Frith2013 · 12/09/2019 11:52

It’s an unused drain from where there used to be a washing machine or dishwasher.

Thank you so much everyone!! Mumsnet is great!

Will get a cap to cover it

Just measure the pipe before you head off for the cover, glad you've got it sorted!
