Has anyone here done the 3 peak challenge?

I really fancy doing the 3 peaks as a challenge next year. But as much as I'm fit and love hill walking I am not good with ridges/steep drop offs etc. I'm not scared of heights but I'm terrified of being near the edge. I don't think that would be an issue for Ben Nevis or Snowdon but can anyone comment on Scafell Pike...would I have to deal with ridges or drop off edges to get to the top?
Amy, anyone that's done the 3 peaks in one go have any advice from their experience to pass on? Thanks!

DH & other friends have done it a few times. You’ll need someone who likes driving & doesn’t like walking if you’re doing it in a timed period. I have just asked him for any other tips & he says start with Snowdon & finish in Scotland as that’s where the best pubs are. Helpful.

I’ve done Scafell Pike & I am a wuss. That’s the one I’d want daylight for all the way up & down.

Hi I've not done 3 peaks but I did the 24peaks challenge which includes scafell. There are drops but just don't look over the edge (it was cloudy when I went and I couldn't see how high up I was anyway)

I did it about ten years ago and id love to do it again

The quick way up Scafell Pike is mostly paved. It's fine in terms of edges.
Tips: definitely bribe/pay someone to do all the driving so the walkers can sleep.

  • DH changed socks after each peak which he says really helped him.
  • If you time it properly, you can do it all not in the dark in 24 hours.
  • We ended with Snowdon going up the miners track around 3.30am as it starts off wide then it's light by the time you get to the scrambly bit.

Yeah I did it. It depends on what times you are going to do it and which one you'll start with.

We started in Scotland at about 2 in the afternoon. Which was totally fine. You'd have no issues on Nevis.

Scaffle Pike was in the dark at about 2am I think. I couldn't see any of the drops (if there were any) so it was irrelevant - might actually work better for you. It was beautiful when the sun came up as we descended and I didn't see anything that would have been an issue.

Snowden I actually found a bit harder. Perhaps because we were all shattered by then and the path we took was a bit steeper (not the tourist one). There were definitely small parts of climbing in this one. But by then you are so invested, determination to complete the challenge sets in.

My best advice would be to do it with a guide. Ours kept us on the safe paths, had a van and driver for us, and had plenty hints and tips.

Knee supports are a must. I didn't take them as I've never had a knee issue - but you can't account for the strain the descents put on your body and I've had a knee issue ever since.

Lots of clean socks, break your boots in properly, plenty water and glucose snacks. Waterproofs were essential too (and that was in July!). Gloves - I was shocked at how cold it was at the top of Nevis, and Scaffle at night.

It was awesome. It's one of the things I'm really proud of doing and we raised shed loads for charity in the process too. Go for it!!
