Bastarding back pain first thing in the morning

I've had 4 sessions with an osteo. Been to gp. Even forced myself to go to yoga twice a week for a month. Every morning my back aches and aches. Twisting from the waist makes it twinge. Once I am up and after an hour or so of walking around it eases, but is always 'there' iyswim. It's hard to pin point where the exact pain is.

Any miracle cures? Although walking around helps, I am finding it harder and harder to get up as i am so bloody ground down by it!

A TENs machine. I have a very serious scoliosis and various other bits and bobs and as a result suffer from chronic pain. If I've slept well it can make getting up easily nigh on impossible. A TENs machine helps as it gets your muscles stimulated before you have to physically get up, iyswim. There are some great lightweight, portable, battery operated ones on the market and I often have mine on during the day with the control in my pocket. No-one seems to notice either.
Would also second those who said pilates; a strong core can make an enormous difference and I can certainly tell if I stop doing it for a bit. The long body pillows I find help me to sleep better too, being able to wriggle them around until you're comfortable I have found much more useful than spending a small fortune on various matresses over the years and which have made no difference.

Sorry OP, I must have missed the bit where you said you hated pilates. I find doing them with a gym ball much easier and a bit more fun. Even just sitting on it and doing some gentle stretches helps alleviate some pain and contributes to core strength although they are a pita to store!

I've been thinking about a 10s machine

I have to sleep with a pillow between my knees or my back is screaming agony first thing in the morning.

Andromeida59 · 11/09/2019 19:24

I had similar. It was a slipper disc in my lower back.

Get a Back Magic. You start off on a low stretch setting and build up. You only need a few minutes a day.

They are marvellous. Your spine will thank you.

I was told by my rheumatologist that back pain that's worse first thing can be due to inflammatory conditions like arthritis and spondylitis. Equally, though, bad sleep posture can make a big difference. I find that if I roll onto my back in my sleep, the pain will eventually wake me up. On my side is best, with a pillow between my knees or with one leg in front of the other as if in the recovery position.

I had an MRI scan to look for arthritis in my spine because I was experiencing similar symptoms to yours, but it turned out to be degenerative disc disease. Oddly, since I went into the menopause, the symptoms have improved, but I think asking your GP for a referral for a scan might be a good idea if changing your mattress and working on your core doesn't help.

Try a pillow between your legs at night. Having one leg over the other throws your pelvis out of alignment.

What do you hate about Pilates? Maybe you haven’t found the right teacher. It solved all my back problems whereas yoga gave me a back injury due to the over stretching in some poses....

Just like a previous poster says, back pain in the morning can be a sign of a rheumatology condition. It would be advisable to see your GP and ask for tests x

Ps Have knowledge of this from family illness

I had this and after Osteo/blood tests etc I ended up at rheumatologist. It was an auto immune thing. Now back to normal (controlled by drugs) but it had slowly built up to the point when I couldn't bend down to put my knickers on in the morning.

There are also various menopausal aches and pains it could be and poss thyroid conditions!

Good luck I didn't realise how much it had affected me mentally until the pain went
