Am really considering joining.

Am 16st and so scared of looking like an idiot, having negative comments or just feeling awful.

What can I expect?
I'm just So nervous.

I am in the obese category and started going to the gym about 7 weeks ago. I'm amongst the least fit but there is no judgement, everyone is helpful and supportive. Do it is my advice, you'll feel so much better.

donquixotedelamancha · 09/09/2019 23:22

I'm fat. Went to the gym for years. Never had a negative comment. You'll be fine.

Blankiefan · 10/09/2019 06:30

People are more interested at looking at themselves than you. I started (this time!) at 17 stone. 3 months later, I'm close to 14 stone and feeling loads better for it.

Make sure you do the gym induction and get a programme made up for you. Make the most of the time you spend in there.

NcHere · 10/09/2019 07:22

Wow. Well done Blankie!

I'm 18 st and go the gym. No one bats an eyelid at me. Other than feeling a bit embarrassed about my lack of fitness at my induction it was fine! They couldn't have been more lovely.

Just go! You'll feel so much better about yourself

AnalUnicorn · 10/09/2019 07:25

Why don’t you start by doing long brisk walks before joining a gym ? It’s free and will help kick off your fitness improvements and build your confidence. It’s amazing how much better you can feel after a couple of weeks of doing this. Make sure you walk fast enough to break a sweat though.

NcHere · 10/09/2019 07:27

Anal I've lost 2 stone already and have been working out at home. I think it's time for the gym now.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 10/09/2019 07:28

I'm the same weight. I've been going since July. Haven't lost much weight but started doing C25K on the treadmill just did on week 3 run 2 yesterday. Also had a 1-1 session of this Omnia thing. 30 seconds each of push ups, pull ups , jumping jacks etc for 30 minutes. And I survived. Very supportive gym staff.

I'm feeling much better and I have visible calf muscles GrinStill a big tummy but I'm getting there.

ChickenyChick · 10/09/2019 07:29

Gym is a great way of forming new habits!

Go for it

shrumps · 10/09/2019 07:33

People in the gym are only interested in their own progress. Definitely go - put your headphones on and enjoy yourself!

dementedpixie · 10/09/2019 07:36

I'm just under 16 stone and prefer classes than the gym itself. I find having other people in classes in more motivating and have made friends with some of them. I do 2 gym fit classes which use the gym area and equipment plus body pump and body attack

NcHere · 10/09/2019 07:38

Classes are NOT my thing. At all. It's my idea if a night mare.

I tried them when I was a healthier weight so I know they aren't for me

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 10/09/2019 07:40

I like the social side of them but if that's not for you then go to the gym. Maybe you just haven't found the right class for you

NcHere · 10/09/2019 07:43

I have anxiety and social anxiety so I'm trying to avoid people 😂

I like the idea of headphones on, head down and just getting on with it on my own at the gym (after induction)

Bloomburger · 10/09/2019 07:50

I'm a PT and go to the gym on a daily basis, I would look at you with nothing but admiration as I know it must take a lot of courage and be a big step when you are bigger than you'd like to be and it's not your natural habitat.

I'm training a lady at the moment who I am just so proud of, she was having trouble walking down the stairs and her mobility always seriously being affected by her weight and lack of exercise and she is now running around the park and doing weights and hiit sessions.

Good Luck x

TillyTheTiger · 10/09/2019 07:53

I'm terrible for yoyo dieting so I've been at the gym at 16st and at 10st and nobody pays any attention whatever weight you are, they're all just interested in their own workout. Make sure you do the induction. If you can afford a few personal training sessions I can totally recommend it as they can come up with a fitness program tailored to what you want to achieve, and they push you more than you'd push yourself.
Well done for your 2st weight loss so far, that's brilliant!

NcHere · 10/09/2019 07:53

Bloom that's fantastic.

I wish I could afford a PT but they gym membership itself is going to be a stretch financially.

Maybe I'll win the euro Grin

OP posts:
Jellyshoeshurtmyfeet · 10/09/2019 08:28

I go to group sessions with a PT at the gym and it's much cheaper than you would think. I know you would prefer to go on your own but the trainer will help you so much and you might be less likely to miss sessions.

NcHere · 10/09/2019 08:32

Is that one top of gym membership?

If it is I honestly can't afford it. Already struggling with the first month as there's a £15 joining fee.

It's a 'Better' gym and I live in the ONLY city in England that doesn't have the reduced membership for benefit claimant scheme 🙄

I just joined a gym. I was worried I would be larger than most people there. But there are people of all shapes and sizes. The total fitness gym have a system where you get a trainer who you meet once a month or so as they find it encourages you to keep going.

barrelohflaughs · 10/09/2019 08:34

I’m 16st (and some) and go to the gym a few times a week. Other gym goers are only interested in their workout. I’ve never seen anyone stare at me and if they look at me it’s probably because they want the machine I’m on.

Make sure you have an induction and learn how to use the equipment. People are even less likely to look at you if you’re using a machine right.

It’s honestly nothing to worry about. I go to the same classes as some of the fittest people at the gym and no one bats an eyelid. You’re there to lose weight and get healthy. How else can they expect you to do it?

Good luck

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 10/09/2019 08:36

I am in the charmingly titled "morbidly obese" category and I go to a gym where I genuinely believe I am the fattest person there. I have never seen anyone else as lardy as me in the building.

But if anyone does think negatively, they hide it very very well as I have met some of the nicest people I've ever known there. My fat arse just is what it is, I can't hide it, so I have to assume people like me for who I am.

I get congratulated as much as anyone when I achieve something new or work really hard.

MrsMozartMkII · 10/09/2019 08:42

I'm overweight and go to the gym.

Nobody cares about what anyone else looks like.

Mine has some serious body builder types. They don't pull faces at me, they're really quite helpful if I'm stuck with a machine.

I have a personal trainer once a week. He's a lovely very fit and good looking firefighter, luckily he also has a bloody good sense of humour as I'm so unfit and various bits of me no longer work properly. He just focuses on where I'm going to get to and how to get me there, he's never made any off comments despite me being a fat, unfit, middle- fifties woman. I'm actually enjoying going.

You go and have fun lass.

Jellyshoeshurtmyfeet · 10/09/2019 09:13

I go to an independent gym and the PT group sessions are included. It's about £40 a month but I could do 7 sessions a week, use the gym, jacuzzi, etc. The trainer also helps with nutrition. I know £40 isn't cheap but I reckon I was spending a fortune on take away, crisps, etc anyway

NcHere · 10/09/2019 10:04

I've just found out I'm eligible for a disability pass and I have no joining fee and a reduction of £5 a month.
And these things below.

Which is so helpful
