Giant hedgehog living in my garden

A few times I’ve heard rustling in the hops plant by my kitchen and now I’ve seen it - a whopping great hedgehog.

I’m worried for the little guy - there’s so many cats in this area, will he get attacked? How’s he getting enough to eat?

Can’t put cat food out, the cats will eat it. What should I do? He’s so cute.

Now is the time to feed them so they survive the winter. You can get cheap cat food from Aldi which they love. You just need to make an easy feeding station so cats don’t get to it. A simple box like this will do images.app.goo.gl/LJtU6YjV7Kuh6GbA7

I want a hedgehog Smile, I live in the countryside and back onto a field but iur garden lawn is very tidy and we have no bushes or flower beds just grass right up to fence. Is it unlikely hedgehogs would come in our garden as no hiding places.?

avocadoincident · 17/09/2019 06:04

@Salene if you are very rural it's not the best habitat for a hedgehog as badgers will eat them. They prefer a more urban environment with lots of gardens to travel between.

You could become a hedgehog rescuer and have one life with you for a few weeks. Sometimes they just need to be fed up and gain weight before they can be released. Others just need a place to hibernate over winter if they are too young to be released before winter.

Find your nearest rescue here.

@labellesauvage123 Slow shutter speed + adjusting white balance and exposure using editing software afterwards. (Assuming your question was aimed at me - if not, please excuse me while I die of embarrassment.)

LaBelleSauvage123 · 17/09/2019 08:32

HoggingtheHedge it was! And thank you! I need to get the good camera out instead of using my mobile.

grrr,
I want a MHR (meaningful hedgehog relationship) during the day but I keep forgetting to look for them at night (plus I like watching telly).

😂😂😂 at 'meaningful hedgehog relationship' @Noconsent

I sent my picture to my mum and she replied and said that I'm overfeeding him.
Now I have hedgehog mum guilt. We'll work on reducing our portions Grin

Yikes

I HAVE A BABY HEDGEHOG!!!

I already "have" Leonard who is about four times this size and as I write I can hear this baby snuffling about.

What shall I name it?

I had a huge hedgehog living in my last garden(for over 5 years) We used to cuddle using thick layers of towels! I really miss him.

So excited - I got a hedgehog house for my birthday and on only the second night Arthur was going into the tunnel and sniffing about the straw and leaves inside the main bit. I’ve put it in a sheltered part of the garden where I’ve been feeding them, but haven’t camouflaged it or anything. Only got video, which I can’t post here ☹️

Friends for dinner on Saturday night our dog carried in a hedgehog and laid it on the rug, he is obsessed with them. We just carry them out again. Our guests were thrilled.

I had a race with a hedgehog once. I was on my moped puttering down a country lane and it was running along beside me, my ghast was truly flabbered. In all the years I'd seen them I never realised they had long legs. Grin
Also saved (I hope) a young hedgie in my local church yard. It had something wrong with its foot. I gave it some cat food, which it hoovered up and then took it to the vets.

CherryCheezcake · 25/09/2019 09:58

If your dog has picked up a hedgehog, please take it to a vet or a rescue immediately, as bite wounds can result in a lingering and very unpleasant death. And train your dog that hedgehogs are not toys and they should stay well away from them.
