No one told me how much I'd love....

My dog.
I've been a cat lady all my 51 years. I have two currently (who are, frankly assholes Grin). Never needed a dog.
But my ds2 who is a young man with autism adores dogs, wants to talk to everyone he meets and it is the only thing he has ever asked for ...someone to love who doesn't mind that he's, well, different.

So after much deliberation, and research we went on a list and in July, we brought our puppy, a rare breed, home.

I looked down at this little creature, leaving everything she knew, tucked up in a crate next to me in the car, and felt overwhelming protectiveness.
Fast forward a couple of months...

God I love her SO much! The way she is so happy to see us, the way she greets DS2 ..she doesn't care that he is autistic, uncoordinated, odd..she just loves him. She snuggles up to him, and to all of us and the world is a better place . She has brought SO much joy into our busy family (6 adults here)
The cats are coping (and complaining ..we spend a lot of time and Dreamies begging for forgiveness)

But I wish someone had warned me that my life would never be the same again :) No one will EVER love me like my puppy does!

What a lovely post!
My DDog at a friends house tonight as going away and it's awful. Just heard DH coming upstairs presuming he'd have DDog - I miss her so much and it's only a few hours. House feels so empty
No one ever told me either how much I would love my dog.
Best ever thing we did as a family

NetballHoop · 09/09/2019 00:32

They are amazingly lovely creatures. We had cats for years and then hamsters and rabbits but none of them came close to the smelly, needy, horse poo eating, farting, follow me around the house all day creature whose poo I pick up every day.
If it wasn't for his inconditional love of me I'd LTB in an instant. As it is though I love him and he's never let me down unlike some close humans.

Your son obviously knows that everyone needs a dog in their lives. I bet you are eternally grateful to him for showing you! And yes, cats are arseholes (I have 2)

feathermucker · 09/09/2019 01:02

Lovely post

newreality1 · 09/09/2019 01:02

I agree. Mine never fails to make me smile or lift my mood. They are just the best!

NoShitHemlock · 09/09/2019 01:23

I totally agree! My little bugger is currently asleep on the sofa in the nest I always make for him from blankets (he doesn't sleep in his own bed as he has me well trained!)

managedmis · 09/09/2019 01:28

I'd really like a dog

We work full time though so it wouldn't be fair on the little beggar

MadisonAvenue · 09/09/2019 01:53

I wouldn’t be without my boy, he’s my first dog and I didn’t realise just how special they are. I love him so much.

Our children wanted a dog, I was the one who needed persuading and almost said no because I thought everything would be left to me and I was right, but I don’t mind and he shows so much love and loyalty.

Vaquita5 · 09/09/2019 01:59

Don't want to spoil your joy, but after having had 4 PTS, last one in Jan, I'll never have another. Am fostering now instead. Yes, it's hard letting them go, but at least they leave alive, and to a loving home.

Stillfunny · 09/09/2019 08:27

Our first dog was rehomed to us by a woman whose elderly Aunt had to go into a nursing home. The Aunt and her husband had never had children, so the dog was so important. I went to visit her with a framed photo of her dog with my DCs on the beach. She was so happy to that
that he was being loved and cared for.At her funeral , the vicar said that she treasured that thought ( and the photo ) until her dying day.

When this dog died , he had a wonderful burial . Wrapped in his blanket , letters were placed with him , DCs colouring pics of hearts, flowers and a graveside tribute including song

Truly a dog adds to a person's life.

Shock

You’d never have got away with that when Portia was around. Does Obie come home now?.

Oldraver · 09/09/2019 09:39

Does he talk about the dog more than Dr Who now ? (haven't seen him in a while to find out)

YorkieTheRabbit · 09/09/2019 09:55

We have two dogs and they are wonderful. DP had never been keen on dogs where as I love them, but he decided to get me a puppy after I’d looked after a friends. He was adamant that the dog wouldn’t be on the furniture, go upstairs etc etc
Within a week, DP was completely in love with the little fluff ball Grin
Needless to say that both dogs have captured his heart, they sleep on the beef, sit on the sofa and pretty much trained him.
No one will ever be as happy to see you as your dog, Smile

YorkieTheRabbit · 09/09/2019 09:56

Sleep on the beef Shock no they sleep on the bed! They’d eat the beef

StillMedusa · 14/09/2019 14:11

Oldraver yes I suspect everyone who comes into Asda has heard about Orla Grin Then again most of the staff have trotted out to coo over her !

Fluffycloudland77 You are so right.. that's why we waited til she died..I still miss her terrribly tho. Obie's life hasn't changed a bit tbh... he comes in, eats, has a quick cuddle and then slopes back off to Thelma's! He is wary of the puppy but she is stairgated so he just glares at her and carries on!
