Call in sick with tonsillitis?

CerseiLannistersHair · 08/09/2019 19:52

I've had tonsillitis since Thursday, which started with sudden and extremely severe throat pain and two days of high temperature where I was hallucinating. I've been pretty constantly on painkillers since and once they start wearing off the fever comes back. Today I woke up in agony not just in my throat but in my right ear. It is hard to even swallow my own spit. Out of hours visited and said it was bacterial tonsillitis and have prescribed a week of amoxicillin.

So two questions- how long until I feel better?

Can I call into work sick? I'm worried to because I've been off for two weeks on unpaid parental leave (though checking emails and keeping on top of urgent things, I'm a one person team) getting my child settled into school and it is a really busy time. I'm scared it'll look dodgy or skiving but I feel dreadful still. The only way for me to get to work is by bike too and I don't even have the energy to move from room to room.

Of course you should call in sick 🤒

cheeseislife8 · 08/09/2019 19:59

Definitely! I lost a stone when I had tonsillitis because I couldn't swallow properly for over a week, it's shit. I really feel for you OP. Call in sick, stock up on liquids and get to bed!

CodenameVillanelle · 08/09/2019 20:00

Of course you must. Tonsillitis takes at least a week to get over.

Yes! Off sick OP. I've had tonsillitis earlier this year and it was awful. Exactly as you described with the hallucinations too. Stay in bed and take great care of yourself. Antibiotics will take about 48 hours, then you'll feel tip top. Thanks

Likethebattle · 08/09/2019 20:39

You’ll feel we’re pretty quickly with antibiotics but you still need to rest and finish the course of medicine.

DramaAlpaca · 08/09/2019 20:41

With tonsillitis I don't think you have much choice, it's nasty & you'll need a bit of time before you start to feel better.

Topseyt · 08/09/2019 20:41

Absolutely you call in sick. Tonsillitis is no minor ailment.

Topseyt · 08/09/2019 20:44

Pressed send too soon there, sorry. I meant to add that I hope you feel better soon. Be kind to yourself and rest properly.

tinofbeans · 08/09/2019 20:45

Call in sick! I've had tonsillitis and it was utterly grim. you'll feel better in a couple of days hopefully.

Just a warning though... my ABs didn't totally kill it and the tonsillitis came back after 6 weeks, worse than the first time!

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 08/09/2019 20:46

I ended up in hospital on a drip when my tonsillitis travelled into my ears and head. I was I agony. I was throwing up and had a temp.
I went to out if hours when it started and was told it was viral so to just wait it out.
Then became so ill my mum had to take me into out of hours as I was vomiting blood, probably due to living on strong doses of ibuprofen without food, but I couldnt eat!

When I went to out of hours the second time my pulse sky rocketed and I was immediately sent up to a&e. No beds sk I had to sit in the waiting room hooked up to a drip that was hanging off the information board in the waiting room. Not my finest hours.

Work genuinely thought I wasnt that poorly and was consistently asking me when I would be back in work.

When I went back after 4 days off, completely deaf in both ears from infection, I was told I had made work very difficult for the past week being off and was not entitled to sick pay..

Take the time off, and stand your ground if work are as shit as mine. I wish I had bigger balls.

Friolero · 08/09/2019 20:48

Definitely call in sick, tonsillitis is excruciating.

Mintypea5 · 08/09/2019 20:48

Definitely call in sick! I'm unlucky enough to be what my dr calls "prone to tonsillitis" had it a lot as a child and then again in my late 20s

Last time I was so ill I couldn't eat or drink properly for days. Looking back I think I was probably very dehydrated and prob should have got some further care but eventually managed to drink from my thenToddlers sippy cup but took me almost 2 weeks to recover

Make sure you rest up (and try keep your fluids up

Bluewavescrashing · 08/09/2019 20:51

I had tonsillitis for 6 weeks when I was early twenties due to 2 impacted wisdom teeth. The fever was horrendous. Call in sick, rest and suck on ice lollies until you feel better Flowers

WMPAGL · 08/09/2019 21:13

Absolutely call in sick - it's horrible and noone in your office would thank you for passing it on to them.

In my experience the antibiotics start to make you feel better pretty quickly. Get on them asap to head off any worsening. Sympathy!

Crunchymum · 08/09/2019 21:41

Tonsillitis is the most ill I've ever been as an adult. I had the joy of having it over Xmas a few years back when the Monday and Tuesday were bank holidays. I managed to see the GP on day 5 and I spent most of my appointment sobbing. I have never felt so wretched. Got AB but the Dr said it was 50/50 as to whether they'd work and by day 6 when I got the AB script fulfilled, I began to feel better.

It ruined xmas though (I couldn't eat, drink or even really speak.... and I usually work that time of year but had booked the whole festive period off and was bloody ill for my entire leave!!)

Call in sick Flowers

pointythings · 08/09/2019 21:49

In about 48 hours you'll feel a lot better when the antibiotics kick in. Until then, don't go in to work. Tonsillitis is excruciating - I've had it twice and couldn't function at all either time.

YesQueen · 08/09/2019 21:52

Definitely don't go to work
I am also prone to tonsillitis, and not the mild type! I remember having to get my mum to drive me to OOH with it, the doctor said "what makes you think it's tonsillitis?"
I opened my mouth, mum and doctor recoiled "um yes, that's definitely tonsillitis" GrinGrin

Soluble painkillers can really help, gargle with them and swallow

MrsMyreton · 09/09/2019 17:50

How are you feeling today OP?

CerseiLannistersHair · 09/09/2019 22:24

I feel a little bit better, I think the antibiotics are helping. I tried to eat solid food but failed but had some ice cream. I did end up calling in sick, I felt awful this morning and feeling floored with exhaustion. I still had to walk my son to school though and looked like a right mess! I am going to call in sick again tomorrow and just try and keep sleeping.
