Laying Lawn Turf. Tips, dos and don'ts please help!!!

Hi, I have posted a few times recently in the gardening section but have had no replies. I would really like your advice and input please! Smile

I have dug up an area of my garden in order to extend the lawn. The area had a variety of plants such as lavender and geranium, along with fruit bushes such as raspberries and blackcurrants. And quite a few weeds in between!!

I have dug it all out, replanted what I want and have so far gone over the soil to get rid of large rocks, weeds and roots. I need to do this a few more times I think!

This is the 1st time I will be laying turf, so any tips, dos and don'ts would be gratefully appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Make the soil as good as you can, doing what you have been doing. (Think about digging down if you are likely to have any deep roots.)
Think about the level - there is nothing more annoying than lovely new turf with bumps and hollows in it. You could use long lengths of straight wood to check if you have them.
Prepare the soil for the turf by loosening it all and then compacting it a little by going over it walking on your heels in tiny steps.
Finally rake level.
When the turf arrives, don't accept it if it's too dried out.
Lay it so that the long edges and any joins on the rolls don't just butt up against each other, but need forcing against each other to lay flat. This will avoid gaps.
Water well for at least two weeks, possibly three.
Don't cut for at least a month.

Just a more specific question! Please!

I have dug it all over but there are still bits of grass and roots in it from small weeds and the fruit bushes I pulled out. Do I have to rid the soil of everything?! Seems a mammoth task 😬
