Rash after viral infection

Dd started with a temperature Wednesday night. She is eight months old and it was coming in in the late 37.somethings. This continued until today where its now dropped to normalish.

Nothing obviously wrong with her but she wasn't herself and a bit whingeier than normal. Sleeping a little bit more. Not eating as much or taking as much milk but still feeding at usual times.

Tried to ride it out but pfb so I took her to docs Friday morning just to be on the safe side. Dd was checked over and diagnosed with a viral infection.

Today is the first day her temperature has been back to normal. She seems a bit more like herself but her torso is now covered in a red pin prick rash. They are raised spots.

I seem to remember the last time she had something like this as she started to get better she came out in a big rash and I went back to the docs and they said it's common after a viral infection so can anyone confirm this?

Googling just takes me straight to sepsis and meningitis and common sense tells me she would have to be a lot worse for it to be something serious. We have done the glass test and when pressed firmly enough it does seem to dissappear.

Help before I go wasting doctors time yet again!

Quick bump. Rash is also on her scalp which I've not seen before.

Yes my sister's toddler had a rash and she was told the same thing by the doctor. Took a good few weeks to clear up.

Thank you so much. Have been driving myself mad all day thinking should I ring 111 or not but common sense tells me she's pretty much fine in herself just not as happy as usual and her temp has come down after four days of high so she seems to be getting better.

Also heat rash comes when they're too hot so I'm guessing it's a similar theme. Her body has been hot due to her high temperature so the rash has come out.

I just am really anxious about her health due to past events and am always worried I am being ott.

DS always used to get viral rashes all over.

He has also had a sepsis rash and that is under the skin (to do with blood) and isnt raised at all. It is definitely very different

My DD gets viral rashes too. Horrible & scary to see, but doesn't slow her down at all. As long as rash disappears under a glass (Drs call it blanching rash) should be fine Smile

Dmt80 · 08/09/2019 20:20

My Ds had very similar symptoms when he was 11months old. Very high fever of 38.3, a couple of days later a rash followed over his body. Pedeatrician said a rash is common after a viral infection and that it possibly could be Roseola. The rash basically looked bad but didn't seem to bother my ds. He made a full recovery a few days later.

Lightsabre · 08/09/2019 20:29

I'd call 111 and discuss with them as she is so little.

Rarfy · 08/09/2019 20:47

Thank you everyone.

I was going to call 111 but I'm pretty sure they would ask to see her and I really feel like I would be wasting their time. She is completely fine and on the mend from whatever she did have however, as I said, she is not quite as happy as normal although my no means distressed or anything. No crying. Not drowsy. Taking milk feeds and small amounts of food.

We did the glass test and that was fine. I did see roseola yesterday when googling and it could possibly be that but from what I could see it requires no treatment anyway.

Having read the roseola thing again on the NHS site I'm almost certain it's that.

Rash definitely started on chest and back last night and has risen up to her head as the day has gone on. All the timings are right and the fact it shows once they start feeling better all adds up.

My DD was prone to viral rashes, we still took her to the GP because she is my PFB and every time they were, it’s just a viral rash. The one time I didn’t... scarlet fever Blush so my advice on top of the usual glass test, is that if they are well in themselves otherwise, e.g. no temp, not grizzly etc. Then prob viral rash. Any other symptoms, best to get it checked!

Rarfy · 09/09/2019 09:48

Thank you. I was only at docs Friday which is why I'm really hesitant to go back. All other symptoms gone now just rash. Doesn't help that I think she is cutting her first two teeth at same time. Never off her right ear but those were checked Friday so not concerned about anything there. Thank you.

Hello hopefully you get this message I seen in mumsnet a post you made about a year ago about your child developing a rash and viral infection. I think I'm going through the same thing right now with my son and was just wondering how long it took to clear on your child? His started off as widespread slightly raised pink pimply rash in stomach and back then it changed to bad patches of eczema and flatter pink spots spreading up to kneck. Dr said its viral infection as had runny nose etc cough but now it's changed again to bad eczema and like purple/pink pinprick dots. Was this similar with yours and if so any tips to clear it or how long it takes to clear? Baby is well in himself otherwise. Thanks for your help x
