Worried about birth defects

Hi there. Been to a couple of midwife appointments and I am worried about getting a 20 week scan incase it picks up something wrong. So much so that i am tempted to just skip it! I am 35 and my hubby is 13 years older so it would no doubt put us in the high risk group.

But you go to a scan SO it can pick up that something is wrong! It’s an anomaly scan.

At that point you would be given advice and be able to prepare.

Don't skip it. It's important. I think its entirely normal to worry but you should go.

SoyDora · 08/09/2019 14:11

If there is an issue, the issue will be there whether you go to the scan or whether you don’t. The only difference is that if you are aware of any issues, you can prepare for them and deal with them accordingly.
Have you had the NT screening?

Would you rather know at 20 weeks so there can be a plan or when you give birth?

SoyDora · 08/09/2019 14:21

Sorry, I meant the screening for Down’s syndrome etc. It’s usually a blood test and a measurement taken at the 12 week scan.

My baby would have died if I hadn’t gone to the 20 w scan as I had vasa previa. My usual didn’t have the equipment needed to detect it and said she never would have been able to spot it. It’s an umbilical cord problem so once he survived the birth he was fine.
Please go!

@SoyDora Getting that in a week's time.

Have you not had a 12 weeks scan yet then? I wouldnt start worrying about the 20 week scan if its not for ages!

If there is an issue it is much better to find it at the 12/20 week scan than later - which could be at birth depending on the issue. The issue would be there whether you had the scan or not and they might be able to do something if known about in advance.
