Leaving work on time!

I've just gone bs k to work full time-ish (33.5 hours, school) I have three days when I finish 30 minutes after school ends and two later days. Excellent I thought, I can do my school run for those three days and mine don't need after school club as my DCs school finishes later. But no, people seem to be hanging around with just a few of us leaving 'on time'.

DH says just leave, it's presenteeism (DH is paid handsomely to answer emails on holiday etc 😟) I'm certainly not paid enough to hang around. Plus I've not really got anything to do on those days that I can't get done during my two late finishes iyswim.

Am I going to look bad if I leave on time?

Your DH is right, leave on time and set a good example to the rest!

Yes, leave on time! You don't even need to justify it by saying you're picking up the kids. Just work the hours you're paid. Im not sure how you do the school run if you finish half an hour after school finishes though 🤔

Oh god, leave! I build in an extra 15 minutes to do anything that’s pressing (e.g. returning, filing or printing). If it can’t be done in that 15 minutes it’s a job for the next day.

Good god just leave on time.
I worked under a manager who expected over hours work, he was replaced by the type of manager who tours the office to chase people out Smile.
The upshot has been a huge improvement in staff retention and a noticable drop in sickness.

Sistedtwister · 08/09/2019 10:28

The people staying are obviously unorganised and unable to complete their tasks in the allocated timeframe. If anyone questions you leaving on time suggest performance management for the ones that don't 😁.
Your DH is right.

Stuff that- kids come first, not work! If others stay that's their problem - just say 'bye, off to collect my children' and forget about them

WrongKindOfFace · 08/09/2019 10:31

Leave on time. Nobody benefits from a culture of presenteeism.

Working in a school I really think here it depends what position you are employed in, are you a teacher, a ta or are you admin based?
I do not know of any teachers who leave shortly after the children, most remain in school marking / preparing for the next day for a couple of hours. Ta's, there are always those who work to rule, but equally many many who arrive early to help set up and stay behind after school as well.

Yep leave on time!!!

I'm a manager and I leave at 5pm on the dot to pick kids up on time. Granted I usually do another couple of hours on an evening to catch up on emails.

I expect my team to leave on time too, I've said to them in the past "erm aren't you meant to be on your way home by now??"

I've worked in a very well known company where it was seriously frowned upon to leave the office at your actual finishing time and it was noted in my probation review that I "consistently left the office at 5pm" yep that's what time I'm paid until... not a management role and not particularly well paid. Sod that!!

This culture of constantly over-working, doing loads more hours than you are being paid for (especially in more junior roles) is killing our work/life balances and damaging home lives. I would much rather be seen as someone who works hard to get the job done in my working hours and also be able to sit with my kids for an evening meal.

To answer a few questions. I'm a TA/Keyworker in a SEN school. School actually finishes 45 minutes before my DCs school.

The days are manic and I sometimes don't get a break at all. I don't mind getting stuck in and going above and beyond when necessary but I'm definitely seeing a culture of hanging around on those early finish days...oh, and I go in 30 minutes early in the morning.

Thank you to everyone who advised me to leave. That's what I'll be doing.

Oh God, my work is like yours OP......I’m looking for a new job. It’s just hideous and my manager is a micro-manager who expects far too much from us all.

crimsonlake · 08/09/2019 14:41

As long as you are working your contracted hours it is entirely up to you then and the school can say nothing. I suspect other TA's are not hanging around as there is always a lot to do at the end of the day. I am a teacher, currently working on supply and I have seen the whole range...ta's who arrive on the dot and leave on the dot, others who do a great deal above and beyond the role. You need to do what suits you.
