So fed up with spending all night going to the toilet.

I wake up about 4 times a night needing a wee. I sleep badly and it's getting worse. I've been this way most of my life. I've had medication from GP to help with irritable bladder but it made no difference. Sorry can't remember the name of the tablets. What else can I do? I'm so tired.

I could have written this myself. I 'only' get up twice though. I have tried cutting back on liquid but to no avail. I'm sorry I'm no help I'm just here in solidarity.

superram · 08/09/2019 08:18

What about drinking more in the day to stretch your bladder then nothing after 7/8pm. You’ve probably tried it though.

Namechange3007 · 08/09/2019 08:21

Yes ive tried that thank you. Makes no difference. Sometimes in the hour or so when I first go to bed I will go to the loo three times just in the hour. Dont even need but its lying down that makes me feel like I do.

Do you limit coffee, coke etc? Coke does through me so fast it's pointless drinking it.

Go back to your GP and ask for a urology referral. It sounds like you might have a bladder prolapse, there’s a few different treatment options but if the drugs aren’t working you need to see a specialist,

ShowOfHands · 08/09/2019 08:29

I was listening to the radio recently and they had a programme about nocturnal weeing and an expert said that the main cause is psychological. You don't need to go but can't relax and sleep until you do but then you worry again that you need to go and rinse and repeat.

If you've ruled out physical causes, how is your mental health? When did it start? Did it coincide with any event in your past? Ever had any help with the poor sleep?

SacramentoMN · 08/09/2019 08:31

I used to get up 1/2 times a night. I decided to 'train' my body to go for longer periods. In the day, I tried leaving it longer but in the night, I refused to get up when I felt the urge. I thought I wouldn't get back to sleep but I did. After a week, I stopped waking up to wee. I fell back into the habit again over the summer and had to 'train' again and starting to sleep through again.
I think with me, it's a habit but I now believe that I can break it.
Good Luck

BeerandBiscuits · 08/09/2019 08:32

Cutting back on liquid can make things worse as concentrated urine more likely to irritate the bladder.
Bladder Training plus drinking more water in the day might help.
Also worth keeping a food diary as some foods, additives, sweeteners, caffeine etc can cause bladder inflammation.

Namechange3007 · 08/09/2019 08:33

I do think its psychological yes. Been like it since I was a child.

The poor sleep is quite recent. I used to be flat out as soon as my head hit the pillow but not so for the last couple of months

I think bladder training would help. Oddly I fixed mine by moving house and didn't have access to a toilet on the same floor for a bit (didn't have en suite anymore). So the thought of getting up and going upstairs etc eventually I manage to go all night without going. Remember irritants like caffeine, alcohol, citrus, fizzy drinks can make things worse. Good luck.

littleblackdress26 · 08/09/2019 08:39

Have you asked for a stronger dosage? Other than that I was told I have to train my bladder and laying on my front does seem to make the urge stronger.

Lepetitpiggy · 08/09/2019 08:41

This is me too!! I'm currently exhausted after not getting to sleep until 4am having got up 9 times to go. Each one was a proper long wee as well. It's so depressing

Namechange3007 · 08/09/2019 08:42

Oh piggy that's even worse than me. I'm currently in bed feeling like I need to go even though I dont need too! I'm ok in the day, can go ages.

Lepetitpiggy · 08/09/2019 08:51

Me too!!.it's not every night but certainly comes in waves. Arghhh!

Namechange3007 · 08/09/2019 08:54

I've tried giving up caffeine but makes no difference. I dont drink alcohol. I eat healthily. I drink lots of water.

I definitely have psychological peeing problems. Exactly as you describe at night too. I can get myself comfy, read for a while, just about to drop off and bang! need a wee. Trundle off to the loo for a dribble. Same when we go out, I can't leave the house without going, even if I don't need. Before I go to work i often drop into the supermarket for some lunch bits/ grab a coffee and i now need to go as soon as I walk in. I don't actually do much but I feel like I am bursting if I try to ignore the need and leave once i have got my stuff. I think it stems from being constantly chased to the loo as a child, before we left the house; when we went in days out etc. It didn't bother me until I hit my late 30's though, now I'm pushing 45 it's a huge pain in the arse.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/09/2019 08:59

Me too. My bladder is like clockwork, I don't drink anything after about 7/8 pm and don't drink much caffeine or alcohol.

I go at 1 am, 3 am and then early morning when I usually get up, and it's a big proper wee each time, so I don't think holding it in is an option. If I try to I just lie there thinking I'm going to wet myself.

Not having access to a toilet doesn't help as I've been on two group holidays in the last couple of years that didn't have en-suite accomodation so it was a real pain having to deal with that.

Binting · 08/09/2019 09:00

If it’s psychological could hypnosis work? Presumably it’s linked to a fear of wetting the bed as a child?

A few years ago I was concerned about how many times I needed the loo during the day and wondered if I was diabetic. Tests all came back ok so the doctor told me to “just stop going to the loo as much” which I thought was really unhelpful and dismissive. Thing is, I did as she said to prove her wrong, but she was right, the fewer visits to the loo worked and I stopped ‘needing’ to go as much. In my case it was psychological so this approach worked for me.

Turquoisetamborine · 08/09/2019 09:04

I have this. I did some sort of test at the hospital where they tested my bladder capacity and my bladder is half the size of a normal bladder (also only have one kidney and other malformations).

This kind of makes me feel better about it, at least there is a reason. Now I’m on tolterodine and it’s slightly better. I get up no more than three times in the night and have no caffeine after 3pm. It seems to help.

Weenurse · 08/09/2019 09:11

There is a medication for true nocturnal polyurea ( where you pee much larger volumes at night rather than during the day.). I can’t remember the name.
True testing with urodynamic studies will show an over active bladder or any obstruction.

UnilakTea · 08/09/2019 09:22

Hi! I have a bladder condition for which I am under a specialist for and in the process of having my bladder paralysed. All I can say to you is get a urology referral, your go doesn't know half of what the specialists do! They can really help you! As you might have over active bladder or stress incontinence! Definitely go! You can also be referred to a urophysiotherapist :) good luck.

UnilakTea · 08/09/2019 09:24

Weenurse - it's called desmopressin

pimbee · 08/09/2019 09:34

Yes I get this too, have you had children? The only time is ever stopped for me was for a couple of months after having children as a result of the bladder paralysis in labour! But soon came back! I find my bladder can stretch further but as soon as I get in the habit of going every time I wake it's very hard to go back to once a night.

pimbee · 08/09/2019 09:35

My son takes desmo, I've often been tempted to nick a few 😂
