Average UK house price is £232,000

But what do we think of as the average house? To me it is a 1930s semi with 2 double bedrooms and a single, a front garden with drive and garage and a back garden of about 50ft. Do you think that's right?

I imagine the 'average' house pretty much as you describe. The house I grew up in etc.

I'm just trying to imagine what kind of house, on average, £232,000 would buy you.

But this is a separate question really as it will vary from area to area. As soon as you mention money, it changes what you can buy, on average, depending on where you are doesn't it.

Round here it gets you a 1 bed new build flat or an older shabby looking 2 bed flat. No outside space, let alone a garage.

We are in a less popular, not attractive SE town.

As in people buy here because it is cheaper than elsewhere in the county, but not somewhere people really choose to move to.

My house was £223k, now value 240k three years later. Three bed semi, small drive way but practically on the street. Large private garden. Tiny kitchen and not much storage.

Yes I think of an average house a small being a 3 bed semi. I think it’s because it was the post-war building boom average house, wasn’t it, for Mr and Mrs Average to raise their family.

I’m in Liverpool, it’s an odd house buying area now . Everyone from the south assumes houses like that are very cheap and that you can buy a terrace for buttons. Well, yes, you can but they’re not in areas of the city most people would want to live in.

In my area is a desirable area and house prices are nuts. We bought our average house at beginning of 2003 for £140k. The year before that houses in this street were swelling for £60k!!! Now our house is with nearly £300k so well out of the range of most of the average families who were buying them for £60k in 2002.

Terraces nearby who housed low income working class families only 20 years ago (with maybe the wife working part time or not at all) are now being bought by professional couples both working FT. Doctors, people in managerial posts. It’s nuts.

The ordinary low income working class families looking to buy now have to live in very different areas mixing with some very difficult neighbours. It is a different picture in Liverpool now. If you think you can save money and move from the south to buy a cheap house here, then yes, you can,,but go ahead and deal with the asbo youths and the drug dealers and the gangs too.

I hate it. I hate that the housing market has gone to shit.

In Central Scotland the average house is often a tenement flat. We're established middle class types still living in a flat, it's standard round here.

If you want three bedrooms, a garden and a private parking space in Edinburgh you can either become a fund manager or live on the other side of the bypass.

My son often asks if we're poor because we live in a flat. Our flat is worth 320k and is the very height of Victoria splendour!

Nextphone, you've described my house except the garden is longer and we have a reasonable front drive as well as garage. Yes, pretty average but no one would get a house for the price you quote around here. £650,00 is more like. A lot of older residents downsize or move further out to release cash to help their children. I'm not going anywhere in the near future, I like it here and it's very private.

I'd say your description is of a nice house, not average. It's what my parents live in and what I'd love to live in! Around here that would cost about 350k, maybe more close to town.

I'd say average is probably two bed with a small garden. Anything else is a bonus.

You have described my house if you take away the garage and add 50 metres to the garden. It would have cost £230k about 10 years ago.

I grew up in a similar 1930s house which was council. A lot of these houses were originally council houses, and were built in the suburbs, not everywhere has 1930s housing, so I don’t it’s really an average house.

My house was valued last week at exactly £232,000. Small two bed, 1 bathroom Victorian end terrace, no drive and a small garden. I unfortunately live in a very expensive city in the south west. What you describe as average would be £300,000-350.000 easily here.

London and Southern properties massively skew stats. My mum lives in a 3 bed semi (our childhood home) with a massive garden, an extended kitchen and extra reception room, and double drive - and that's worth £170k in a really nice area.

I live in a not-so-nice area, and have a 3 bed terrace which is quite compact but has a drive and decent garden, worth about £70k.

You can definitely get affordable property so long as you don't want to live in London.
