Anyone up? Should I call a doctor?

I get migraines but haven't had one in 18 months. This afternoon I had blurred vision, pins and needless in hands and a sore head. Usual signs of my migraines. I took medication my sister uses for her migraines and I felt better. I've woken up in excruciating pain all over my head. My vision went blurred again but seems to have gone back to normal now. The pain is like nothing I've ever had before. I took co codamol 40 mins ago and it hasn't helped. My arm feels a bit funny , almost burny in my wrist but not like my usual pins and needles and I feel horrendous. I don't know if it's worth calling out of hours. The pain is awful but I don't know if they'll do anything to help. Reckon it's worth a call or do I just wait it out?

Thanks everyone. I hate making a fuss and get really stressed speaking to doctors. Google telling me it can take an hour for cocodamol to kick in so I'm scared they'll tell me there's nothing they can do. Thanks for replying, it's very isolating feeling this bad in the middle of the night!

Call 111
Get their advice ,
I got a migraine like the one you have ( horrendous head pain and vomiting ) and it just took longer to go , after a second lot of migraine meds x hope ur ok soon

MoaningMinnie1 · 08/09/2019 02:36

Do call the out of hours service. It sounds like hemiplegic migraine or a cluster headache. I used to have the former when on HRT, they stopped when I stopped taking it; when I was on the pill I had migraine but not the arm weakness and tingling, obviously all hormone related. When I stopped the pill, the migraines ceased.

It's scary; I hope you get some reassurance and feel better soon. Come back and tell us how you're doing.

I'm in N Ireland so we don't have 111 here. I wish we did so I could get some advice without feeling like I'm making a fuss. The feeling in my arm has now turned into my usual pins and needles feeling so it may well just be a worse than normal migraine. It's awful, sorry you get them too!

Hope you feel better OP

Had no idea N Ireland didn’t have access to the 111 service. Learn something new everyday

ReanimatedSGB · 08/09/2019 03:07

FFS call for help. It sounds like something is very wrong indeed.

Hollyhobbi · 08/09/2019 03:10

Would have assumed the North had 111 like the rest of GB. We don't have anything either. Only out of hours doc which costs about a hundred euro. Or go to A and E which is also a hundred euro. And you'd be waiting hours either way. Hope you are getting back to normal now OP.

RightYesButNo · 08/09/2019 06:28

OP, I hope you’re doing okay now and you got help. While it sounds like it might have been a complex migraine (they can present VERY similar to a stroke), I’ve had migraines for years (eek) have been told many times that the rule of thumb for seeking emergency care for migraines is: first or worst. If it’s the first one you’ve ever had or worse than any you’ve ever had before, then you need to seek immediate help!!! These symptoms can hide a range of other very serious issues, so that’s why.

Feel better, OP!

Jacksback · 08/09/2019 07:51

Hope all is ok , please post an update when you feel able x

swapsicles · 08/09/2019 07:59

Hope you're feeling better or getting help but Never take other people's medication!
If you're taking other meds it could cause problems, maybe even the cause of your feeling unwell now

maidenover · 08/09/2019 08:03

@movingonbackwards in my experience if you call the out of hours service you can ask the doctor just to give you a call back rather than go to an appointment.

Although I hope you’re now feeling better.

Broken11Girl · 08/09/2019 08:06

A worst ever headache needs medical attention. Google out of hours medical services in your area.

TheQueef · 08/09/2019 08:10

Sorry to hear you are suffering.
Have you done the usual? Blackout light, no noise, cool room, eye mask...etc does it give any relief?
What medicine did you get from sis, triptans?

wowfudge · 08/09/2019 08:10

Please see a doctor OP, even if you think things have lessened.

Sedlescombe · 08/09/2019 08:31

Hope you are feeling a little batter. Did you speak to a gp?

hopeishere · 08/09/2019 08:51

Call out if hours. As a pp says they will call you back before deciding if you need to be seen.

Also stop taking your sisters medication.

movingonbackwards · 08/09/2019 08:54

Thank you everyone. I know you shouldn't take anyone else's medication. I konked out eventually and managed to sleep. I'm going to see how I go over the next couple of hours but I'd like to get to checked out and have a plan and my own medication if it happens again. The pain has subsided quite a lot. Some really helpful advice on here and some things I didn't know. Thank you. It really is scary in the middle of the night on your own.

fandabbyfannyflutters · 08/09/2019 08:56

Well good job you listened to everyone's advice....

movingonbackwards · 08/09/2019 09:00

@fandabbyfannyflutters unfortunately when you have a migraine you often fall asleep. This is usually how I deal with my migraines. In this case my plan was to give the co codamol an hour before I called. I was asleep by then. I am grateful for everyone's advice and still plan to seek medical help today.

Adviceorhelp · 08/09/2019 09:17

I hope you’re feeling better. I would go and get checked though. Someone I know gets ‘cluster headaches’ which sound dreadful. I get occasional migraines that make me nauseous which is horrible but I think mine are mild compared to what some people get.

SouthWestmom · 08/09/2019 09:53

Be careful drinking too much water with a migraine. I did this and it got worse. Now I drink water with a teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt or plain water and plain crisps together.

Sleep is definitely the only thing to work although I got a daith piercing and that has reduced them a lot.
