Superstition, if you drop a knife someone else must pick it up

I’ve just come up to bed for my early night, DP called up to me to nip down again to pick up a knife he’s dropped while preparing his supper.
I went straight down and picked it up, we certainly don’t need to be inviting any bad fortune to this house!
This is normal in our house, does anyone else know about this ‘rule’?

Just think, each of these silly ideas was made up by someone who now has thousands of gullible idiots actually doing the thing they made up 🙄

Didn't know about that. In our family if someone dropped cutlery someone else always said, "Somebody will be coming hungry." 🤷‍♀️
I can hear my aunts/uncles now...💖

I have a friend who is from India. We were talking about the various Christmas traditions and superstitions. I told her about having to take down decorations before 12th night or it’s bad luck. She said ‘but who brings the bad luck?’ It was a fair point and I’ve not been superstitious since.

(She was also rather confused about Father Christmas. I told her about leaving out mince pies and whiskey for him but your dad eats it. She was shocked and said ‘you eat the offering for your god?)

🤦‍♀️

(but, I completely understand the astonishment/confusion this caused!)

In our family, when she dropped a knife, my mum would say, “ Pick it up, but I can’t say ‘ T H A N K Y O U ‘ “( spelled out in letters rather than saying the word). Gloves joined the list of dropped things which couldn’t be picked up by the dropper.

@BStrange sooo...you're the one who revived this thread, eh? 🤔

My husband had never heard of this superstition but after being around my crazy Aboriginal/ Irish family he now won’t pick up dropped knives either. We often have knives on the floor waiting for someone else o pick them up maybe that’s why we never have any sharp ones 🤔
