Do I have a blood clot?

I am terrified I have a blood clot. I did ivf during the summer which failed and I stopped the meds on 14th August. Since then life as normal (after dealing with the emotional strain of a failed cycle - but that seems less important now) apart from an Achilles heel injury over the bank holiday weekend which led me to my move a lot for a couple of days (I was not fully immobile though).

But in early Sept I start having this pain in my thigh which is getting worst. I end up in a&e on Thursday evening and am told that it might be a blood clot. The did a d-dimer blood test which came back slightly raised but nowhere near where they would expect numbers to be for blood clot. But it was not negative so inconclusive. Since numbers were not high they couldn't book scan same day (didn't hit the parameters for emergency) and I was sent home with a 'precautionary' blood thinning injection and booked for scan today at noon. I am petrified.

Only the scan will tell.

Of course you feel scared and anxious but try to keep calm as stress impacts on our health.

It’s not long now until you have the scan and can then see if you need any treatment.

Hope it goes well for you and you’re soon home.

@Soola thank you for replying. I have relatives with me for emotional support, but I just feel so scared. Trying to stay positive.

I had a PE back in September last year.

If it is a blood clot then they've found it - you're already on the treatment. Drink plenty of water - mine had already moved to my lungs and caused damage sounds like if you have one it's been caught early enough. However - it sounds like it might not be with the d-dimer test.

You'll be ok Thanks

Thank you @Greyhound22
I am so sorry to hear about your PE, sounds so scary.
Did you have history or any risk factors?

I am waiting for my scan at the hospital now! Sad

You’ll be fine now you’re in their hands. I’ve had them before with PEs each time and am on thinners for life now. You’ll have your scan and they’ll probably send you to ambulatory care to await the results. If it’s clear, they’ll send you home with nothing to worry about. If it is a clot, they’ll give you blood thinners and send you home telling you to make an appointment with your GP.

I know it’s scary and I probably sound quite blasé about it, but you will be fine. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Hi odear ! Hope everything turns out okay - I had IVF years ago and had progesterone injections in my thigh which were not pleasant at all - I needed to sit on a bag of frozen peas 1/2 hour beforehand to take the edge off the pain. For several months I had painful lumps on my thighs at the sites of the injections - just wondered if it could be related to that - I do know that if IM injections aren’t given in quite the right spot it can cause problems.

Pavlova31 · 07/09/2019 12:05

Nothing to add but I hope all goes well for you today Op Flowers Brew

Greyhound22 · 07/09/2019 12:30

I was on the combined pill so they say that's what caused it.

I'm still on thinners due to a few complications I have (nothing to do with clot).

Thinking of you. It is scary but honestly they see them all the time. I hope it isn't for you.

ohdearohdearohdearohdear · 07/09/2019 12:39

Thank you all! It means a lot and this thread helps distract me for the nerve wracking wait.

@Katarinablum it's interesting you mention the injections. I did have to take IM ones which I did myself on the thigh. I found them very difficult and after speaking to my ivf clinic it transpired that I was doing them in a bit of the thigh that apparently they 'wouldn't recommend'. However they never actually bothered to demonstrate to me how or where to do them exactly. How could I have known?? I am not a medical professional. I am fuming about that but I will deal with that later.

Ohdear that doesn’t sound good. I’m a health care professional and I do know that the injection site is supposed to be upper outer quadrant of the thigh otherwise there’s the possibility of touching a nerve.
Anyway hopefully you’ve had the scan done by now and know a bit more ! Take care Flowers

Soola · 07/09/2019 14:34

Hope the scan went ok.

ohdearohdearohdearohdear · 07/09/2019 15:08

Oh thank you all for your positive thoughts! I am so so so relieved but it turned out to be ok. I had the scan and they couldn't see a clot - I feel like a weight has been lifted. They still cannot tell what it is, but are leaning towards either infection or irritation from the injection being done in the wrong site (or both). I was given a course of antibiotics to see if it helps.

I am now thinking of how to complain to the clinic about them not telling me where exactly to do the injections... it might have been the cause of this situation after all

Really pleased for you 💐

Soola · 07/09/2019 15:41

What a relief! Glad your update is a good one.

ohdearohdearohdearohdear · 07/09/2019 15:48

Oh thank you @Soola @Sn0tnose
It is such a relief. I hadn't dared hope for good news, I was a bit panicked
