Local coffee shop is fibbing about their ingredients.

They advertise Nutella milkshakes, cupcakes and soon, Nutella waffle 'sandwiches'. They also do Oreo milkshakes and cupcakes. However, I've seen the shop owner in Aldi quite a lot, he buys tray fulls of the jars of Aldi's Nutoka and loads of packets of their fake Oreos. It is definitely him, his very distinctive work shirt is easily identifiable.

It doesn't really bother me, I'll still go there for my occasional Oreo milkshake, I just think the guy should be honest in what ingredients he's actually using.

Would it piss you off if you thought you buying a product with Nutella/Oreos and it turned out to be the Aldi version instead?

Can’t say I’d be bothered to be honest

GladAllOver · 07/09/2019 10:25

Oreos are made by the company that mucked up Cadbury. So they are off my list anyway.

Worgust · 07/09/2019 10:27

I think I'd be more surprised if I found out they were using the real stuff. I tend to presume most places use catering packs of tastealikeys

QuantamBaby · 07/09/2019 10:29

No, if they advertise it as 'Nutella' and not chocolate spread I expect Nutella!

Ohflippineck · 07/09/2019 10:30

I don’t care, wouldn’t eat it anyway. But he needs to be careful if trading standards come calling.

Rubicon80 · 07/09/2019 10:31

Oh my god! You mean they're using inferior versions of Oreos and Nutella? Not the real appellation d'origine contrôlée ones?

But that means the high-fructose corn syrup won't even be free-range!

That's shocking.

PullingMySocksUp · 07/09/2019 10:31

I wouldn’t care at all.

Doyoumind · 07/09/2019 10:34

The vast majority of places will do this. There is a big price difference and a very small difference in quality.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 07/09/2019 10:34

I’d only be worried if what he advised, say, didn’t have nuts but the fakealikes did.

AntennaReborn · 07/09/2019 10:36

Yes it would bother me. I would still buy the products if they were advertised as "hazelnut spread waffle" or similar, but I would like to know what I am buying!

soundsystem · 07/09/2019 10:37

I wouldn't be impressed. Oreos are vegan so if it was advertised as an Oreo milkshake then I'd assume I could have it. And it might not be.

Similarly with allergens as a PP said about Nutella. Although I'd always ask anyway...

Ohflippineck · 07/09/2019 10:37

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD

Be a bit pissed off if Nutella has no nuts 🤪

StayInYourLaneBoy · 07/09/2019 10:37

Not the same, but I was in Tesco at 10.30pm last night and saw a man with a Premier jacket on buying about 30 bottles of wine, presumably buying them on offer to sell full price in his shop. Not sure there's any law against it though, times are tough (especially in retail)and people need a make a living

BendyLikeBeckham · 07/09/2019 10:38

why do people assume the own brand products are inferior quality?

nonsense

SistersOfMerci · 07/09/2019 10:42

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

If they taste good I'd be fine. It's a tough market out there so if this helps an independent stay open I'd say nothing.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 07/09/2019 10:43

It is false advertising- BUT, I think we really should be supporting our local businesses and he will make more sales with ‘Nutella milkshake’ rather than ‘chocolate hazelnut milkshake’ so I’m a bit torn on this one !

Ohflippineck · 07/09/2019 10:43

This. Dad was in supermarket/manufacturing logistics for years. Many products, same factory, same packaging, different labels.

Michaelbaubles · 07/09/2019 10:44

Wait, why would a vegan assume an Oreo MILKshake was vegan just because Oreos are vegan? That’s like assuming a bacon and avocado sandwich will be vegan just because avocados are!

PrettyFlyF0rAWiFi · 07/09/2019 10:52

I once worked in a local deli style coffee shop that made sandwiches. They also sold fresh loaves of bread and people used to rave about their seeded granary. It cost £2 per loaf to buy and owner would wrap it in a sheet of paper

Hilariously, this seeded granary came from the bakery at Sainsbury's where it cost £1.30 and fame in a cellophane type wrapper.

I always used to raise eyebrows a little

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 07/09/2019 10:57

@Michaelbaubles I thought exactly the same thing 😂

Lyingonthesofainthedark · 07/09/2019 11:00

Those supermarkets sometimes have deals with the makers of the actual brand anyway. Most likely the same product, pretty much.

Tonnerre · 07/09/2019 11:01

Aren't own brand things often made by the factory that makes the original versions? If so, he's doing nothing wrong.

Tonnerre · 07/09/2019 11:03

I'm a bit surprised he doesn't get the ingredients wholesale, it would be cheaper.

BlockedAndDeleted · 07/09/2019 11:06

I don’t like Nutella, so I may prefer the Nukota version.

I feel like Nutella has become a shorthand for hazelnut chocolate spread, like hoover or sellotape.

If the Oreos are anything like the other Aldi dupes, then that’s fine too.

I do see what you mean and the companies themselves would take a dim view re copyright.

But it really doesn’t bother me, a lot of paper shops round here have Aldi products in at a mark up.

The local Nisa has CooP products marked up.

Retail is notoriously tough, and small traders proportionally bear the brunt of these unstable times but they provide jobs and income for our most economically vulnerable demographic so...

ODFOx · 07/09/2019 11:07

@soundsystem why would an oreo milkshake be vegan? It has milk in!
