Are nuts banned in schools in the US?

I was just pondering the obsession with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in American films, books etc. and thinking about how I couldn’t send my children into school with a peanut butter sandwich.

Do they not have the same issues with nut allergies as we do? Or are nuts also usually banned from schools over there?

No, classrooms in my children's schools are nut free but they are allowed in the cafeteria and in their pack lunches/school lunches. If a child wants to bring nuts as their afternoon snack, then they can go and eat them in the cafeteria. I
Don't forget, on site school nurses are still a thing in the USA.

Nope. DNiece had a friend so allergic she swelled up if DN kissed her after peanut butter for breakfast but nutsnwere still ok in school!

They are banned in DD’s daycare. Outside food is only allowed with a note from the paediatrician confirming allergies that mean they can’t have the school and it mustn’t contain any nuts.

It depends on the school - many don't allow them. However, my DD is very allergic and her school allows nuts but they work hard on hygiene and being aware that other kids have allergies. It's not just nuts that children are allergic to - it can be dairy, fruit, eggs...

In 11 years of her being at schools that allow nuts we haven't had any incidents there.

I work in a school, nuts are not banned in it. When we have a child with a nut allergy then they are not allowed in those classes. They are allowed in the cafeteria though if children bring them. We don't serve any peanut butter though. We have Sun Butter and Jelly instead

drsausage · 07/09/2019 01:13

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer that's pretty much exactly how our schools work.

They do have nut-free tables in the cafeteria, but DD eventually decided to just eat at the regular tables and ask her friends to be careful.

Preschools tend to have a nut free Class if necessary but from elementary onwards they don’t

VimFuego101 · 07/09/2019 01:22

My son's elementary school is nut free - no nut products allowed anywhere, any cakes or cookies sent in must have a sticker to say they were prepared in a nut free bakery, reminder letters sent home about washing your child's hands to remove any trace of nuts. There are several kids with airborne allergies. The high schools here have nut free tables but don't restrict what children bring in.

PotolBabu · 07/09/2019 01:30

When we lived in the US yes they were banned from both my kid’s schools.

mindutopia · 07/09/2019 07:31

It totally depends on if there are allergies, so every school is different. My friend’s son is in a nut free school and he has lots of sunflower seed butter.

That said, Americans don’t live on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches alone. A lot of schools have hot dinners (very unhealthy ones at that).

They are banned in my niece’s elementary (primary) school on the east coast. They were also banned in her preschool nursery and in her daycare. They use Wow Butter (fake PB) for pbj sandwiches in school lunches - you can get “this is wowbutter” stickers so it must be a thing in many schools for nuts/peanuts to be banned.

Her mum and my partner (siblings) remember their schoolteacher dying of anaphylactic shock after eating something with nuts in on a school trip; the US definitely has the same allergy issues if not worse.

Thanks everyone for replying, it’s really interesting to find out what happens in real life rather than tv life.

Now off to google wowbutter and see if I can find some sunflower butter to try Smile
