Is this rude or not?

So my mother and I went to a store today for something specific that she saw online . We browsed through the underwear section and couldn't find what my mother was looking for so I said I will ask an assistant for help

I approached a lady and asked her where we can find the product (anti chaffing under wear ) and she said to me "we don't promote that but we have shapewear" I was taken aback by the "we don't promote" part . How do you feel about that sentence?

She just means same meat, different gravy.

They sell it but it's known by another name.

Squiff70 · 06/09/2019 22:48

Quite rude in terms of being badly worded, but... bigger problems to worry about I'm sure.

Worgust · 06/09/2019 22:48

I'd just think that she didn't have the firmest grasp on vocabulary to be honest.
Maybe one of those people who use 'myself' and 'we do ask' far too often?

BackforGood · 06/09/2019 22:49

SOme people seem to go through life looking for things to offend them.

What do you mean you were 'taken aback' ?

Passtherioja · 06/09/2019 22:53

It's not at all rude...unless she says it in a really rude way.

If she says it quite normally then I'd just think she meant promote/sell as the same thing-it's just sakes speak.

What was her tone/demeanour like?

ohdearmymistake · 06/09/2019 23:10

Sorry not seeing what the problem is.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/09/2019 23:13

Did you think she meant we dint promote it because it's for fat people?

Ohyesiam · 06/09/2019 23:15

It’s just that odd sales/ telephone speak that people do to be formal, but actually just use the wrong word. Like saying yourself when they mean you.
I cant see a darker implication though? So though it might piss off a grammar pedant, I can’t see it as offensive in any way.

Ohyesiam · 06/09/2019 23:16

Worgust you’re a woman after my own heart!

Soola · 07/09/2019 00:07

Not rude.

She’s used the word promote to mean sell. Slightly clumsy but not rude or anything to be offended about.

EmilyStar · 07/09/2019 00:17

I’d have been confused about what she meant. I’m not familiar with the word promote in a sales context.

But it might just be that she’s assumed you’d know what she meant because she knows what she means to say.

managedmis · 07/09/2019 00:22

So they don't sell that brand?

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 07/09/2019 00:30

Not rude at all.

AmIChangingagain · 07/09/2019 00:37

I've read it several times and I'm still struggling to guess what was rude about that
