Prom and Dresses

My daughter returned to school yesterday to discover that over the holidays the majority of her friends had been prom dress shopping for their prom in June 2020 and ordered their dresses.

Now we didn't have proms when I was at school. Thank god as it wouldn't of been for me. However daughter has been looking forward and talking about prom for the last couple of years especially as she's watched the years above her go to theirs.

I've looked online and prom dresses from the shops the others have been to are between £500-£850 and then there is the rest of the stuff that comes with prom such as shoes, make up, hair, transport, prom ticket and then bloody "after prom" parties. This is a whole new world for me.

If any of you have already been through this with your year 11's, is this the norm so to speak and If so how much did prom end up costing you??

I will be giving daughter a budget and anything past that she will have to buy herself with pocket money and birthday/Xmas money.

Lunacy. Go to T K Maxx.

Good grief how much!!my daughters both bought dresses from the high street for around £100 each, transport was us , hair was done in salon, make up and nails- they did each other but that was it. How can they decide what they want to wear 9 months ahead of time. The world's gone mad

Tk MAXx and sometimes charity shops even have lovely ones. Gumtree, eBay too.

My DD had her year 11 prom this summer, at her school there was a mix of dresses ranging "from less then £100 up to £800, some had professional make up others had done it themselves and the same with hair and fake tans. All of the girls looked beautiful whatever was spent. A lot of the cheaper end dresses were from Quiz and just as lovely has the ones costing £££s.

As for looking over the summer holiday that is far too early, my DD started looking during the October half term but didn't decide and order one until about January and she was still one of the first to order one.

I think prom cost us ~£200 4 years ago.

We got a pre-loved dress and had it altered to fit. Bought it ~ January and I considered myself on the organised side of things.

Local hairdresser put her hair up. I paid for nails last minute as a reward for working v. hard for GCSEs.
The shoes (& ballet flats) and cheap jewellery have all be worn again.
Friend took her in convertible car.

You don't have to shell out silly money from prom.

The parents are stupid buying dresses so soon! Don't worry about all this just yet :)

DD got hers from Next - best advice is to buy high street.

All online shops sell them also Boohoo, Asos etc - may not be under "prom" as such but most have an evening wear section

Fast fashion and single use clothing is one of the major contributors to climate change and global warming. So boycott this US tradition and say to your DD that you are doing it for the planet.

Thank you everyone. I was really starting to panic that I was not organised enough. The pressures kids are under nowadays is ridiculous...... I feel much better now.

Safe to say she won't be having a helicopter or Ferrari dropping her off 😂

DD had hers Last year. Dress shopping in Feb. Bought a second from a bridal shop £30, had it altered £60. My mum took her to get make up done as a birthday present. Friends got ready together and they had a lad who wants to do hair dressing put their hair up for £15 each. They travelled in a friends camper Van. Does not have to be outrageously expensive.
