Can anyone recommend some first reader books?

DS has mastered most of the letter sounds now and is beginning to blend them and so I wanted to get him some first reader books for his birthday. Can anyone recommend some simple ones for him please?

I would look at the Songbirds from Julia Donaldson. Books we also found good for shared reading are the Usborne First Reader.

But be careful, they learn these books by heart so fast and move on quickly. See if you can get them second hand or via a charity shop otherwise you can spend a lot of money. I think for most of DD's early readers we hit the library instead of buying.

@reluctantbrit thank you I will look those up.

I hadn’t thought of the library actually. We get books out all the time so will see if they have any first reader ones.

He is only little still so I don’t expect him to make rapid progress, but he wants to try.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions? I’ve seen some Oxford Reading Tree ones on The Book People that I’m thinking about getting for him.

The Songbirds ones are much better stories than oxford reading tree. I got DD a full set off the book people for about £15, albeit about 5 years ago. She loved the stories and could read before starting school as a summer term baby. ORT is both tedious and the most used system in schools so you'll likely have a few years of having to read them! I'd stick with Julia if I were you

Bunny and Bee are lovely first reader books.
They are in rhyme and repeat lots of words.
My dc's favourite was Noisy Night.

My DC had a set from the Book People called "Practice Your Phonics". It's all stories that your DC will know and it's a massive set that increases in difficulty, so it lasts for ages.

When they're confident at recognising simple words, there's some great early reader Star Wars books which got my DS interested in reading despite dyslexia.

Ladybird still publish good ranges for early readers and there's some lovely Usbournes too. I think it's DK that do the more factual style including the Star Wars.

The book people do amazing discounts, and especially on book sets. If you sign up for email alerts then you get notified of their flash sales - up to 80% off RRP. I’ve bought books for years from them in their flash sales to give out in lieu of party bags as well as for my own DC. They have a massive range. Definitively worth a look (I’m not on commission but I am a fan!)

Thank you. I’ve ordered the Songbird ones from the book people so will see how we get on with them. Knowing DS he will probably move on to something else and not be interested in reading anymore by the time his birthday comes! He had a 3 month number obsession which we have just come out of and moved onto letters and words!
