Is a Tripp Trapp worth it?

DS is approaching 4 months so I’ve started thinking about gathering the bits and bobs I’ll need for weaning when he hits 6 months. I’ve seen people rave about the £15 Ikea Antilop but I’ve also heard a lot about Tripp Trapps, which seem to be a bit of a cult product. There’s no way I’m paying the £200-odd for a new one but I’ve found one for sale nearby for £50. Is this worth investing in or will I wish if bought the Ikea chair?

My DC are still using theirs at age 7 and 5. I bought both on eBay. I would totally recommend.

butterry · 06/09/2019 09:11

Yes, I held out buying it until baby was a year but should have just bought it! Antilop is rubbish in comparison. Tripp trapp still in use at 6!

sleepwhenidie · 06/09/2019 09:12

Yes, had ours for years ( with 3 under 5’s we ended up getting 2). They are useful for so much longer than other high chairs, look so much better, easy to keep clean - fit under/ around tables easier..and for all those reasons, resell well!

We used ours till the DCs were about 10 and 8, then sold them very easily on FB (I was inundated with takers even though they were a bit scuffed, cushions faded, didn't have all the up to date accessories etc) so even if you don't get on with it you'd be able to sell it again.

givememarmite · 06/09/2019 09:13

We've used (and love!) both, the tripp trapp are still in use now (DC are 7 & 3).
I'd say ikea one is perfect for weaning as can be v easily cleaned. It's handy with the tray as can either sit at table without it or have the tray on and have the chair in the kitchen/same room as you without needing to be sat at a table. My DC were quite small and easily fit in there for a while but your child might outgrow it quite quickly.
The tripp trapp can be used for years however (there is a weight limit but it's up to around 12 years I think). Does the one you have seen come with the baby insert/straps?
If so I'd probably go for that as it's a good price for the amount of time you'd use it.

They are very well made and you could end up selling it for more than you paid.

I bought a new Tripp trapp with my first for £125, used it for 2 kids and then sold plot for £90. Still pretty much immaculate.

MustardScreams · 06/09/2019 09:14

Yes absolutely. I use dd’s when I’m working from home, it’s the perfect height for my desk.

They have a great resale value also so you end up paying something silly like £30 for years of use.

Sheusedtobesomeonelse · 06/09/2019 09:15

My 2 DDs still use theirs everyday - they are 13 and 10 and have been going strong (though i have moved them into their bedrooms for use at their desks) since they were 6 months old! My mum bought them new and they are in very good nick - they really stand the test of time IMO.

GreenwoodLane · 06/09/2019 09:16

That said, the ikea plastic £15 one is very good but doesn’t have a 5 point harness. We had one for the grandparents and DS2, who was an escape artist, could climb out very easily.

WhenDoISleep · 06/09/2019 09:18

I've had a Tripp Trapp since birth with DC2. It's been used with the Newborn set, the Baby Set and is still in use multiple times a day 7 years later. Fantastic high chair and I just wish I had bought one for DC1 as well.

TrophyCat · 06/09/2019 09:19

Yes, absolutely worth it! DD is now 9 and is still using hers at mealtimes. So on a cost per use basis we have got our money's worth even though we paid full price.

cakesandphotos · 06/09/2019 09:30

We love ours. Got it for £15 on eBay. My only issue with it is that it doesn't fold but it blends in with our other dining chairs (if you can call a table and chairs shoved in the corner of the living room that Grin) DS is only 18 months but it'll be in use for years

Frazzlerock · 06/09/2019 09:42

Ours is still going string 11 years later. The paint is a bit chipped and battered now but I could easily repaint it.
I plan to use it again when I eventually have another baby that survives the wrath of pregnancy

Frazzlerock · 06/09/2019 09:42

*Strong obvs

Lemoncurd · 06/09/2019 09:55

We've got two which must be 20 years old now (bought 2nd hand 13 years ago and the seller said they'd had them for 7 years). They look a mess but are otherwise sturdy, we still use them.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 06/09/2019 10:06

Thanks, think I’ll go for it! It looks a little tired but I’m thinking of painting it anyway so it’ll match our other chairs better so that’s no biggy. It does come with the baby set - the older style with the leather strap.

Our Trip Trap chairs are 20 19 17 and 16 years old. Up until last month they were in daily use as they were sett to be adult seats around our dining table. They are now stored in the garage. We have no intention of throwing them out/ selling as they make great extra chairs when we need that. Or when we have a sports Injury dhs recurring back problem comes up they are so much better to sit on . Our 4 children all say when they have kids they want "theirs" for their child. (I have no idea what one belongs to who anymore)

However in terms of value for money they were worth every penny.

Yabbers · 06/09/2019 10:13

We got one from the OT for DD when she was about 2. We only gave it back because as she got heavier we couldn’t push it in to the table without damaging the floor. She had it until she was about 5, and could easily have sat in it much longer. In fact, I’m 5ft1 and would often sit in it myself. It was really comfy.

AustrianSnow · 06/09/2019 11:37

I wouldn’t bother getting it yet. They are fab once the child can sit up by themselves without needing a barrier - so about 18 months. As they’re curved you can tuck them right up to the table.

The ikea one is amazing as a weaning chair. So easy to wipe down. We spent ages cleaning the tripp trapp and then the food mushes into the sodding cushion.

We’re still using the Tripp Trapps now, years down the line for older kids.

If you wait until you don’t need the barrier then it’ll be cheaper because people lose them etc and the resale is lower.

TreacherousPissFlap · 06/09/2019 11:37

I bought ours on Facebook when DS was small, I think it was about £30.

We've used it for years (it's apparently also amazing for sitting on to play the guitar) and sold it a couple of years ago (DS is 15 now) for £40 Wink

JaneR0chester · 06/09/2019 11:41

Enko beat me to it - our oldest Tripp Trapp is 16 years and still being used. Perfect for playing the cello... Grin And great extra chairs when we have a full dining room.

Damntheman · 06/09/2019 12:55

We have two given we're in scandiland and it's the given thing ;) I also use one to play cello! Win.

Yes always worth it but I see you've done it already OP. Nice with the bargain! Be very aware in future that the older style of tripptrapp have different attachments than the new style so make sure you get the right ones for your stool when shopping around.
