Delivery charges for furniture

When you pay extra for a two man delivery of a piece of furniture, would you expect them to take it upstairs, if that is where it is destined for?

And would you expect the price to include taking the packaging away?

Ive deliberately kept the question very basic. So, bear with me. Smile

Yes to the room delivery, not so fussed about removal of packaging, i class it as a bonus if they take it away.

Redshoesandtheblues · 06/09/2019 06:13

Thats helpful, Philippa. Ta.

It’s usually on the websites if they deliver to the room and take packaging away,

Redshoesandtheblues · 06/09/2019 06:18

It wasn't/isn't, Cheddar, so that's why im trying to get some ideas of reasonable expectations for the price.

I ordered over phone, btw.
But I've looked since on their website and there is minimal information.

When we bought our sofa they brought it up to first floor but had to pay extra charges for bringing it up. They assembled it and didn’t take the packaging away.
Not furniture but when we bought tiles they left it at ground floor ( 2 persons delivery again ) as they said for health and safety reason they aren’t allowed to carry it up.

Redshoesandtheblues · 06/09/2019 06:39

Interesting, Purpleseat. Ta, again.

Looks like I'm out of touch.

Ikea delivered my furniture yesterday, they took it into the rooms I asked but didn't take the packaging - but I didn't ask.

Purpleseat · 06/09/2019 06:45

I think every store have their own policies so best to ask before making the purchase if it’s an issue carrying it away etc.
When I revamped my kitchen everything was taken away and had to pay extra for it. But I guess as that’s different from furniture they offer this service to make the kitchen sale attractive?!.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/09/2019 06:56

Yes to both questions but it will be retailer dependant so if either of those factors are important to you, you'd need to check what service is offered.

Delivery charges vary hugely and often don't go anywhere near covering the cost of two people loading heavy boxes into a big fuel hungry van, driving it to the customer and unloading the boxes and taking them to an upstairs room and unpacking the boxes as sometimes they only charge a token few quid when the actual cost will be several times that.

ImAShowPony · 06/09/2019 07:06

I don't think you can expect a standard rate- it would depend on the shop, the type/ size of furniture . I'd expect to pay more for taking upstairs, assembly or connection for, say, a washing machine, taking away what it replaces, and taking away packaging.

Redshoesandtheblues · 06/09/2019 07:06

Good point Barbara.
This is why I'm trying to work out what you'd expect for a non negotiable delivery fee.

Pony, it was a chair.

Hello RedShoes

Each company has different rules on this but in my experience, two delivery persons usually take the item to the required room. As far as packaging goes, personally I would never expect this to be taken as standard. For example, I have just paid an extra £10 to have the packaging taken away from some bedroom furniture I have ordered (Cotswold Company).

Redshoesandtheblues · 06/09/2019 10:26

Ta, cats, this is all very helpful.

Thanks everyone.

Your replies helped me not make a fool of myself by complaining.

But also, very guilty I didn't tip the drivers.

I wasn't at home at time but normally I'd have left tip available. Blush

But I do think when the company charges you a heavy delivery fee, it really should mean the item be taken to intended room. As long as accessible by the 2 men and doesn't take a huge chunk of their time.

I still have a complaint, but different from my original grievance.
