Given that Brexit is such a thorny issue, who do you think could manage it better than Dave 🙄, Theresa and now Boris?

If you could choose any politician to see us through Brexit as acting PM, who would it be? They could be from any party, and have any amount of experience.

And why?

Also, due to this person, what kind of Brexit would we end up with?

(Am a remainer who ideally would want us to stay in, but given that another referendum would be highly divisive IMO, the next best option as far as I am concerned would be membership of the customs union and single market).

To misquote Alan Partridge, none of them could manage a cat.

MyOtherProfile · 05/09/2019 23:28

We could give Ken Clarke chance to sort it. Or John Bercow. He could keep everyone in order.

AutumnCrow · 05/09/2019 23:31

Sir Keir Starmer. Even the Telegraph likes him.

He would be a uniting force, he has the intellect and the credibility, he's not tainted, he's sane.

Nobody, it's a poisoned chalice, whether we leave with a deal, no deal or remain there will be millions of people unhappy.

Whoever delivers it or cancels it will go down in history as very unpopular.

KennDodd · 05/09/2019 23:42

I can't remember who it was, I don't think it was a politician, I think it was an historian. He said that 52/48 was only ever a mandate for a soft Brexit, so sm+cu. Nobody would be happy but it should have been a compromise everybody could have lived with.

ToastAndBlackcurrantJam · 06/09/2019 00:21

Pretty sure my guinea pig could handle Brexit better than any of them.

whatshallIdo1 · 06/09/2019 06:30

Was it Simon Schama @KennDodd?

It is a mind bogglingly intractable issue Sad.

We need someone with technical expertise, negotiating skills, empathy, and who has a real understanding of the issues that caused the Leave vote in the first place IMO.

A unifying force who is able to sell compromise, and give all parties enough of what they want to keep them happy.

Someone who gives people hope.

I don’t think Rory Stewart was the right person, but I liked his citizens’ assembly idea.

My dog.
We went to vote, but he got barred at the gate. It was a school. Id walked 2 miles to get there. Turned up at leaving time, unfortunately.

He looked at me, as if to say, we not doing this, mum.

No choice, son, I say. And walk away.

I so wish David Cameron had had my dog at the time he thought of referendum.

Redshoesandtheblues · 06/09/2019 06:51

Sorry. Not the question you asked!!
But just reminded of the incident.

Redshoesandtheblues · 06/09/2019 06:55

I actually thought Rory was best of bunch tbhwhatshallido

If you look at what you asking for, no one fits the bill.

Iggly · 06/09/2019 06:57

I think leavers need reminding that getting a deal means we have reset our relationship with the EU and we have left.

Unless people want to pay unaffordable prices for the basics, then it makes sense to decide how we will trade and deal with the EU ASAP.

We can’t afford not to, unless we’re Nigel Farage or Rees Mogg.

The issue is that there are very rich people who are desperate for the UK to leave asap because European legislation comes in which will force them to be more open about their tax.

So they’re pushing very hard, using their newspapers/Facebook pages etc, to leave come hell or high water.

That’s quite a thing for a politician to battle against, especially given what happened to the likes of Ed Miliband who got slated for eating bacon (no one looks good eating a fucking bacon sandwich).

Notonthestairs · 06/09/2019 07:00

Agree with OP's last post.

We need somebody who genuinely wants to bring people together - not just trying to cling to power.

We need a Mo Molam.

GlasshouseStoneThrower · 06/09/2019 07:08

Kier Starmer. Fiercely intelligent, has a handle on the detail, doesn't seem to be afflicted by vast ego, comes across as sensible and cooperative.

SarfE4sticated · 06/09/2019 07:14

I wish they’d make KS leader of Labour Party - JC seems a step too far for so many people. Or Jess Phillips?

I really like Rory Stewart and think he would have done a good job. Might not have delivered a Brexit every one wanted (is that even possible?) but I felt we could trust him.

Autumnwindy · 06/09/2019 07:16

Kier starmer just might get remain labour voters back. But for leave labour supporters and any leave supporter, absolutely not.

I find him slippery and now confident enough to come out and say labour will become a remain party.

Autumnwindy · 06/09/2019 07:17

Basically no remain person can get us through brexit, it has to be brexit leavers, leading. Currently I'm happy with Boris.

Autumnwindy · 06/09/2019 07:17

Iggly, very rich people also don't want us to leave.

MadCap · 06/09/2019 07:19

I'd like to see a small cross party group of elder statesmen types who were carefully vetted for outside interests. I'd prefer to remain, but if we must go, I think this is the only way to do it with the country remotely intact.

FreyaMountstuart · 06/09/2019 07:21

Kier Starmer

Metempsychosis · 06/09/2019 07:22

Controversially, I think that if Dave had stayed on he might have had the self-confidence to say. “OK, Norway option now, out of EU and into EFTA. Bish bosh, out by Christmas. What do you mean thats not what you voted for? Show me where it says that on the ballot?”

The combination of Red Lines and wanting to save the NI/GB union meant that TM was always setting herself an impossible task.

Leapyearlover · 06/09/2019 07:23

Until we have a proper debate about what leave means - nobody. The rightwing press still peddling the idea that we can have a type of Brexit that is just not realistic.

VikingVolva · 06/09/2019 07:28

Back to Theresa?

She did remarkably well, given the impossible circumstances.

And I think her deal is the only possible one, we will end up with it eventually, and with hindsight historians will really wonder why on earth it wasn't accepted in the first place.

But it's all too heated now, and calm headmistress style isn't going to cut through it. If she had won the last GE (as everyone expected when it was announced) then yes we would be out of EU by now, but it would be on a liveable-with deal.

BeardedMum · 06/09/2019 07:34

Revoke is the only option

alphaechokiwi · 06/09/2019 07:35

I've never voted Tory in my life, but I think Ken Clarke could do it..

longwayoff · 06/09/2019 07:47

Nobody but Farage supported by Mark Francois (Oh. the irony!) Would satisfy Leavers. It's insoluble, I can't think of anyone who could bring it all together. How about Jarvis Cocker? He could bring his bare bum which might be useful when words fail.
