Dodgy situation with neighbours' post?

Our next door neighbours are definitely in a poor financial situation. We've seen bailiffs knocking a few times and they own a couple of businesses which are not doing well.

We've lived next door for 2 years. In the past few weeks we've had 3 letters delivered from the inland revenue, with neighbours name on but our address. Yesterday we had a letter from a bank, again with their name but our house number.

We've written on the envelopes that it's the incorrect address and put the letters back in the postbox to be returned to sender.

We'll mention it to our neighbours next time we see them but it just seems quite odd to me. Anyone have any experience of this? I'm worried they are trying to use our address in some way because of their financial situation. Would that even be possible??

It sounds like they are doing it on purpose, could be bank loans next. I would mention it to them and also say I had written to the DWP and told them they have the wrong address, I would also call into the branch and explain my concerns and give the correct address.

Yes, do more than 'return to sender'. Although I think you did the right thing there. Like @MaybeitsMaybelline I'd contact the Inland Revenue and the bank myself. Make a note of who you spoke to and when.

Go to bank and take ID with your proof of address. I recall having to prove I lived at the address before other person was removed.

Thanks very much for the responses.

My husband spoke to the female neighbour this morning (her husband is the one the letters were addressed to). She said it might be because they owned our house many years ago. I don't think that explains it at all, because it's only in the past few months this has happened.

Yes, I think I'll definitely contact the senders directly if it happens again.
