Consultant and dentist can't agree on whether dd1 needs her wisdom teeth out

Dd1 is on her 3rd wisdom toirh infection in less than 6 months, her dentist took x-rays after the 1st and doesn't think they will come through so referred her to the consultant. Thankfully we got a cancellation so she got seen quickly, the consultant said that he thought they would come through fine but would review in six months, that was in June. She's since had 2 more infections, our dentist is still saying she doesn't think they will come through and is going to contact consultant to see uf dd can get an appointment before December. Don't what to do as 1 tooth in particular is aching continuously.

I've had 2 infections in mine (its partially erupted) and my dentist said 1 more and they would take it out. Its bottom left.

It can be risky due to nerve placement etc but normally a straight forward procedure.

Did the consultant say why? Apart from he thinks it will come through fine because that's not a reason. If theres numerous infections and its uncomfortable there is no reason they cant remove.

I do think the guide is 3 infections within 12 months though

I didn't attend appt as I was working, it was dh who went with dd and neither of them are good at asking questions. She's now had nearly 24 hrs of antibiotics for this infection but it's more swollen and bleeding so I think she's going to have to go back, unfortunately although not allergic she can't tolerate metronidazole(horrendous side effects) which is the best one for this sort of infection.

Not sure how we'll get her there tomorrow if she's to go as we're both working and although dd is 17 she has aspergers and won't go without one of us, it's also awkward to get to without a car.

retired dentist
some lower wisdom teeth are very close to the main nerve in lower jaw, th distance the tip of root is from nerve is crucial even if a tooth won't come through moving even another mm from the nerve canal will significantly cut the risk of damage to nerve, damage to nerves can be permanent and as the inferior dental nerve supplies all the teeth on that side and the lip, damage can result in loss of sensation of even a droopy lip, it maybe the surgeon thinks at 17 there is still a possibility of the tooth moving a bit not enough to come through ( like your dentist said) but enough to reduce risk, this has to be balanced against repeated infections
using hot salty water at least a spoonful in a glass of water not a few grains or corsodyl as a mouthwash can help but rather than swilling around whole mouth tilt head to one side so it goes around infected tooth
extracting upper wisdom teeth is easier and less risky also occasionally removing an upper wisdom tooth allows the lower on a bit more space sometimes when lower tooth is considered too risky to remove a healthy upper wisdom tooth can be extracted to try and give it a chance of erupting more
obviously I have not seen xrays so am only speaking in general terms so it may not be applicable

I would definitely make sure that someone goes with your DD if she has a wisdom tooth out. I had one out as a 34 year old adult, and I was very glad that DH turned up to pick me up afterwards.

It is not painful, and I found the dentist was very kind and patient. However, it is a big tooth and involves a fair bit of pulling and breaking up. I felt a bit odd afterwards. It is nothing to worry about, but I think that your DD might appreciate a lift home afterwards.

I hope it goes well for your DD.

She's come home now as pain is worse, going into throat and side of face is looking slightly swollen.
