Hi my little boy is under a paediatrician as is anaemic ( second time this has been found on blood tests )They are unsure of cause as he doesn't have a limited diet . He has complained of a funny tummy for a good while now they tested for coeliac but thsts negative. What we have found is that if he eats lots of wheat it seems to make his tummy irritated (no runs or anything just says sore ect) The Paediatrician said some people are not allergic but just sensitive to lots of wheat so is happy for us to cut it down a little. She also suggested red meat at least 3 times a week, beans, lots of green fruit and vegtables. I have been following advice but sometimes find it abit of a struggle cutting down on wheat. For breakfast i have been giving things like one slice of toast with
a tin of beans , making omelettes ect and he always has fruit. Lunch I find quiet easy just give wraps, crackers, breadsticks ect rather than the sandwich then all other bits meat/ cheese/ egg / tinned fish ect plus fruit /veg / yoghurt / flapjacks and tea I'm just trying to give meat , potatoes and veg type things/ fish pie ect he always eat at least 5 fruit and veg a day usually more. He drinks milk and water snacks on fruit/ cheese/rice cake ect. He is taking an iron supplement until we But I have read that children need more carbs than adults so does this sound about right ? If any of your children had similar issues what did you find that works ? I'm a bit worried I'm getting it right Thank you

How is his weight? If he’s losing, you need to increase carbs/fat intake but if not I wouldn’t worry too much.

The thing is, he shouldn’t need to have his diet watched like this. He has a medical issue and they need to find out what it is rather than trying to stick a plaster on it by increasing iron in his diet. Something is causing the low iron and they need to figure out what it is.

Are the wraos, crackers, bread sticks etc. wheat based?

Carbs are in loads of things which are wheat free/low wheat. Porridge, potatoes, starchy vegetables.

@Happyspud thank you for the reply his weight is ok at last appt he had gained ( he is small but always has been ) he has a little tummy but can see his ribs. Well we has just had more blood tests I'm waiting for the results then we will see the Paediatrician in 2 months. They are unsure about cause which is frustrating our Doctor said it's not uncommon but usually it's in fussy eaters my little boy is not fussy and never has been he eats most things and always has. That's why she referred as she doesn't know and it's the second time he has been anemic but seems like the Paediatrician doesn't either. She wants him on iron for 3 months but has had bloods after 1 month to see if it's going up, plus diet high in iron but to be honest I feel he already had that but am making more effort. She has taken more bloods this time including thyroid so hopefully we will get answers soon.

@Unshriven just normal ones so he getting crabs in there I know , he doesn't have coeliac so doesn't need gluten free items but she said if too much irritated just cut it down a little bit obviously not too much. He does have lots of potatoes/ jacket potatoes/mash with squadh/ sweet potatoes in ect

After years of DS having tummy pains and what he calls butt pains I decided to try cutting gluten out and it has made all the difference. He does occasionally now have some gluten but if its kept to a minimum he’s ok, so definitely a sensitivity rather than an intolerance.
For breakfast he has gluten free toast (he likes the genius toastie). Packed lunches he has genius pittas, at home he often has the schar rolls or gluten free tortilla pizzas. If we have pasta in the evening he likes red lentil or brown rice pasta. He is a fussy eater but it’s not as hard as I thought it’d be

Hi I know this is old thread but I wondered how you got on? My DS is in a similar situation at the moment and I feel like we are going round in circles trying to work out what is wrong with him
