Exercise Bike - should I bother?

eeksville · 04/09/2019 18:20

I really need to start exercising again but struggle to make the time & have the energy to go to the gym. Debating about an exercise bike that I can ride whilst catching up on tv. Will I use it? Any types that you would recommend? Thanks

A rower might be better as it engages the whole body.
Or what's really effective is getting a kettle bell (or 2 with different weights) and following a video on YouTube. The workout needn't take longer than 30mins to be effective.

Do you own a bike?
You can buy rollers to put the back wheel on and create an exercise bike. Takes up less space than an exercise bike as you can put it away.

Of all exercise kit I have ever had a rower has been my favourite.

I hate rowing unfortunately. I think i have kettlebells somewhere, any videos you would recommend?

I do have a bike & stupidly never thought of that so will look into!

thank you

Someone on here recommended Fitness Blender on YouTube on here to me.
Loads of free videos.

I have a bike which I have been using in my bid to get fit again. It’s good when you start but I find I use it less and less as I feel even with the resistance that I am getting a good workout on it.

HITT with small weights is better I think.

Chocmallows · 04/09/2019 23:07

Unless you buy one with good resistance it becomes too boring easy too quickly. I am currently considering getting a cross trainer, but expect it will end up like my bike - folded in the corner.

RaininSummer · 04/09/2019 23:48

I bought one some years ago with the same idea as OP but the bike was so loud when used that TV watching wasn't great. Makes a good clothes horse though

I have a cross trainer and love it. It's pretty quiet so I can use it and listen to a podcast or watch TV at the same time. I always found it difficult on a rower because you're moving around and they're really loud.

I chose a crosstrainer over an exercise bike because it's weight bearing so helps bone density which cycling apparently doesn't.

ViserionTheDragon · 05/09/2019 02:44

I second the kettlebells and Youtube. You could also get a resistance band and small dumbbells too. I like HasFit and Fitness Blender on YT, so many workouts to choose from and you can do the workouts at home.

Bluetac19 · 05/09/2019 04:38

You can hire things like this. A good way to see if you'd actually use it!

eeksville · 05/09/2019 09:02

I actually was looking at cross trainers on ebay yesterday as I used to use those over the bike in the gym. I think I will start with weights/vids & if I can get a cheap x trainer that's a bonus.

Thanks all, operation get fit during the summer failed but hopefully autumn won't!
