Nestle. Want another reason to despise this company?

In Tesco today, and probably available in other supermarkets too, I saw that the company who likes to endanger the lives f third world babies by promoting formula has now decided to turn its attention to increasing the amount of waste in the world. Yes, instead of simply washing and reusing (many many times) a simple cereal bowl, you can now buy a "box cereal" , open the box, pour in the milk -no need for a bowl- then discard in the bin making it someone else's problem to deal with.

I wonder if they are using the same PR company as Harry and Meghan.

Idiots. Nestle I mean.

Yes, so that product exists in fridges - the nestle boxes are redundant and don't work without the other components.

They're just extra unnecessary packaging.

This is so strange. I looked at the press release and it looks almost identical to the little boxes I had as a child over 50 years ago. Maybe it was a different cereal company or it was available in Canada but not the UK. I believe you can still get them.

As I recall we usually dumped the cereal in a bowl! But I remember my brother eating it out of the box, milk and all.

Errol, sorry, I wasn’t trying to compare them.

I just can’t see the difference between the product highlighted by the OP and the numerous similar items available.

I suppose people think it saves on washing up?

I’m definitely not agreeing with it, just think it’s part of a world full of shite.

Trying - I was actually thinking, what’s the plastic in the box like? Have nestle just reframed something that existed all along...

tryingtobebetterallthetime · 04/09/2019 17:27

I don't remember any plastic. If my aging memory serves, I believe it had some sort of waxy paper, sort of like what you call greaseproof paper. They were not the kind of thing you would use long term for liquids.

I am ashamed to say we thought they were a wonderful treat as kids. Especially since my parents were very strict about us not eating sugary stuff, so it was only when camping.

Fromage · 04/09/2019 17:28

Does it save on washing up? I mean, how much washing up does a bowl take - very little I would imagine. Ditto the plastic bag inside the box because you would need to at least rinse it thoroughly before you recycled it.

That's assuming every person eating one of these boxes would recycle it though. Which they wouldn't.

I'm interested to know what the bag is made of, that's recyclable.

For what it is worth, they don't make sense "on the go." Eating a milky "bowl" of cereal on a bus or in a car sounds rather silly to me. I have seen the little boxes carried around to be eaten dry as a snack.

I do see the little boxes of cereal on breakfast buffets such as in hotels or on a cruise ship.

Dyrne · 04/09/2019 17:39

You’ve got a point about packaging waste in general, but singling out Nestle makes you look a bit unhinged. There’s loads of this sort of “food on the go” product out there - why focus on Nestle in particular?

RosaWaiting · 04/09/2019 18:10

“Does it save on washing up?”

I’m guessing most people just chuck it in the bin tbh, isn’t that what these products are designed for? I mean, they can say “recyclable packaging” but what happens to it in reality, I wonder.

Trying “Eating a milky "bowl" of cereal on a bus or in a car sounds rather silly to me.”

Im guessing you’re spared the horrors of Tube commuting?

tryingtobebetterallthetime · 05/09/2019 00:33

Yup, no Tube commuting for me. But I have spent a fair bit of time on the Tube when visiting. A milky box of cereal, just no.
