Driving Down To Devon

I'm off on holiday to Devon next month with a friend who's driving us down there from London. I've said I'll split the cost of petrol (obv) but roughly how much should I budget for a drive down? Not being a driver, I haven't a clue how much to set aside.

Roughlyish?

What kind of car? Mine does it unless than a £50 from west London but a Range Rover going from east London would be double that at a guess

Depend on whether its motorway driving, size of the car, where she buys petrol.

moobar · 04/09/2019 14:19

On rough google maps it's about 180 miles ish. My car does about 600 to the tank and costs 70 to fill. So would be about 20 to 25 each way.

cookiemonster5 · 04/09/2019 14:19

Is it a petrol or diesel? Make, model and tear? Motorway or just A roads through towns? Is the driver efficient or fuel heavy (do they ease up and down gears smoothly without over reviving it do they red line each gear before changing up and then slam on the brakes)?

It's impossible to give a ballpark figure. My last car I could easily drive the length of the county on one tank but it was diesel. My new car, same make and model but petrol, smaller engine but more bhp does about half the distance to a tank.

We drove to cornwall from stansted last month. Filled up before we left and had to fill up again at Tiverton. 1.6l Car fully loaded with roof box, tank was £60 ish.

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 04/09/2019 14:40

Thanks all.

What kind of car? It has wheels, that's all I know (really so not into cars) Grin Grin It is a big car, but not quite a Range Rover.

It will be motorway, from West London.

I'll set aside £70 to be on the safe side. As long as I can hand over most of it when we're home, that'll be fine. If I have some cash left over, the cat gets a fish supper.

This all sounds very straightforward and amicable for a car sharing thread on MN.

Can you try and have some sort of falling out on the trip or something? Grin

Maybe she’ll fill up in one of the service stations with an M&S and do a big shop and expect the OP to go halves. There still a chance Sparklingbrook

I drove from SE London down to Ilfracombe last month in a diesel. I put in £80 and that got me there and back!

AtillatheHun · 04/09/2019 15:21

@sparklingbrook the OP can of course demand that for her contribution she takes control of the in-car entertainment and then plays an audiobook of David Cameron's autobiography all the way there.

audiobook of David Cameron's autobiography all the way there.

Aaaaaaaaaargh!!!!!! It was bad enough having to listen to him in Parliament without having him in the car with us.

Don't worry, my friend and I will be away for 5 days together before getting back in the car and driving to London. Plenty of time for us to start working out how to kill each other. We've never been on holiday before.

Criticise their driving. That should do it. Grin

JulietTango · 04/09/2019 19:58

As a side note, why do we drive down to Devon?
I live much further north than London, but would still drive up to London.
I get driving up to Scotland because it's furthest north in the UK.
If you live in Wales would you still drive up to London, or would you drive across to London, or even down to London? 🤔

Sparklingbrook · 04/09/2019 20:01

I am Worcestershire and drive down to London and also down to Devon and Cornwall.

IAmcuriousyellow · 04/09/2019 20:02

If you start from Devon you’re going Up Country

stucknoue · 04/09/2019 20:04

Mine costs £60 return (midlands, not too much traffic) add £10 if there's congestion. Also factor in driving while there of course

welliesarefuntowear · 04/09/2019 21:35

If you live in Wales and you drive to London you're driving across to London I reckon.

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 05/09/2019 11:45

Oh yes, that would get me left on the hard shoulder!

As a side note, why do we drive down to Devon?

Well, I'm going down to Devon, cos it's south of where I live. I would be going up to, say, Shropshire. I'd go down to Kent, but I'm not sure about Essex (I live in NE London)...... Over, I suppose.

OP posts:
TheSecondMrsAshwell · 05/09/2019 11:47

But I get your point. It annoys me when I friend of mine says he going down to Cumbria.... from London.
