How do your DC fill in their homework diary?

My DS has just started year 7. He has so far filled in the task under the day its due. So, if the teacher on Mon says complete this sheet for 6th Fri, he has entered it under 6th Fri. Is this how your DC do it? Or do you enter it on the Mon, and then tick when you’ve done it. The sections do have a ‘due date’ next to them.

I know this is a boring & silly question but I can’t remember how I used to do it! Maybe it doesn’t matter as long as you consistently use one method or the other

Mine enter it on the day it's given, but also put "English due" or whatever on the due date as well. They also tick both when done.

Date it the date it is given. Otherwise he may end up having too much on the day before it's due and unable to do it all. Far better to do it as soon as you can, rather than work backwards from a deadline - that's true for adult life too, so would be good preparation.

Mine do the same as Emma. Write it in the day it is given but also write in the due date. Try to put more than 'English due'. It is better to e.g. put 'English Macbeth essay due' or 'English prep speech due'.

If DD gets more than about 3 h/w at any time (rare so far in y7-9) we end up writing a separate list and agreeing when they will be done.

Monday

Maths — pg. 4, Ex 2 and 3a-f. 6/9
History — read chapter 3. 5/9

Tuesday

French — Pg 2, reading exercise 5/9
— vocab list 1 10/9

Then tick them off when they're done.

At that age you won't have things with a very long deadline, so unlikely to be forgotten.

If he did want to do both given and due, I'd use a different colour, or split the day box somehow to avoid confusion.

Mine puts it on the day it was given so:

Monday

Maths p3 q2-4 due Mon 9th
English read chapter 2 due Fri 6th

Tell him to put it on the day it's given to him so when you ask if he has homework, you'll know if he's telling the truth!

We used to have 2 teachers for some subjects too so if we had two sets of German homework, it's easier to know which ones which if you write it on the day it was set, as an example.

I think that is very school specific. DD often has 2 weeks to do h/w for the non core subjects, easily long enough to be forgotten.

On the day it is given with the due date next to it.

Then at home it is transferred to a monthly wall calendar, it is put on the due date so DD has a better view what is due when and as it also shows her hobbies and other commitments she can see when to do what.
