What's wrong with a VW Polo?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 03/09/2019 16:51

I noticed a thread about buying cars on which several people said not to get the Polo. Why? I'm thinking of trying some used Polos, Sport & GTI. Any opinions on them/ experience with them?

OP posts:

I just bought a Polo on Saturday after doing extensive research on the best small (automatic) cars. I'm very, very happy with it so far, it's a massive step up from my old Fiat 500.

Picklypickles · 03/09/2019 17:37

I've no experience of Polo's but did have a Golf and it was nothing but trouble from the moment we got it home from the dealership, it broke down a lot and even the VW garage couldn't figure out what the fuck its problem was!

Cabezona · 03/09/2019 17:40

There is nothing wrong with them.

Good solid brand, more for your money and nippy if you get the GTI.

It's a bit small but the new polo has the same dimensions as a mk4 golf which was never seen as small so...

It’s the subject of many gifs and memes due to its reputation of breaking down.

My brother is a mechanic and VW is one of the few car manufacturers he has anything good to say about. He says they have some specific parts that need regular maintenance (a chain rather than a belt, for example) but with regular servicing he says they will last for years.

RJoneszy · 03/09/2019 20:04

Anything VW is reliable and will last you a very long time.

StillMedusa · 03/09/2019 20:27

They are boring to look at ... but other than that pretty solid cars :)

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 03/09/2019 20:29

I love mine.

mystupidmistake · 03/09/2019 20:31

VW are fantastic cars. You really can’t go wrong. Get it bought OP!!!

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 03/09/2019 20:32

I have a golf and I absolutely love it.. although I would like a newer one for the techier inside but I'm poor do I'll have to make do with my tombstone of a stereo.

im exaggerating massively, I have a lovely 11 plate with a touchscreen stereo, I'm just bitter that I cant afford a new one

FaithInfinity · 03/09/2019 20:38

The mechanic at our local garage said they were great but he wouldn’t get a newer Polo now as the newer models have problems a lot. I’ve got an 08 plate Golf which was a solid investment. Not the sexiest model (it’s a diesel so it’s a bit clunky) but it runs well and it’ll do 550 miles to the tank!

YesQueen · 03/09/2019 20:43

Quite happy with mine, 5 years old now and I had one before this one
It's needed a new window regulator (not unusual TBH), one set of brake pads, one set of tyres and that's it. And I've done 40,000 miles in it

GrimalkinsCrone · 03/09/2019 20:54

Had polos for years in the 90s-2000s. Robust, unpampered, parked on the streets of Leeds for years and completely reliable. They started in any weather, I loved them.

rslsys · 03/09/2019 20:54

We bought (used) Polos for all three DDs. Ideal first cars, simple, bombproof & safe. Small engined versions cheap to insure.

misspiggy19 · 03/09/2019 20:57

I’d rather have a Fiesta over a Polo

Rachelover40 · 03/09/2019 21:02

Polos are nice cars. There's always the odd rogue car in any brand.

Ohmywhatabigegoyouhave · 03/09/2019 21:07

I had a 61 plate a few years ago and that was absolutely fantastic. Had 4 crashes in it and it was still sound! In the 5 years I had it it needed NOTHING done to it apart from the bare minimum. Only had 3 services in the 5 years too.. Was cheap to run and very spacious. Never once broke down! Part exed it with two massive dints, and the engine management light on for 2500 only paid 8k 5 years ago so didn’t do too badly considering the poor state I got it in!

patm99 · 03/09/2019 21:10

I had a polo diesel in the 2000. A really horrid unrealible car. I became very adapt at jump starting it. I would never buy one again. But I do now have its cousin the skoda fabia which is fantastic and totally realible.

RatWife · 03/09/2019 21:20

I have a 2000 golf, so same size as a modern polo. It's just done 200k miles. I love it and it has never let me down or had anything majorly go wrong, with regular servicing.

Bloodycats · 03/09/2019 21:43

I’ve had a polo and loved it. I have a golf now and love it just as much. I’ve never had a breakdown but do get it serviced every year.

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/09/2019 21:47

We have a 15 year old Polo. Gets us from A to B. Nippy enough when we need it.

HabbyHadno · 03/09/2019 21:47

My best ever car was a Polo. Can't wait for the kids to stop needing car seats and I can get back into one.

GandTisgoodforme · 03/09/2019 21:55

Had a polo GTI from new in 2016 and finally got rid of it last year. Was an awful car, faults, engine management problems and reliability was non-existent. Was at the dealership multiple times a year and the customer service from the dealership and VW head office/finance was terrible. Never again.. just my experience, and probably had a ‘Friday afternoon’ car which was just bad luck but it’s tarnished my views on VW.

moanyhole · 03/09/2019 22:14

I havw a 02 VW passat. Bought it in 2006 and it has 385 on the clock. Best car ever. Never a bit of trouble and still zipping around not a bother. May as well keep driving it until it eventually gives up the ghost but honestly it seems indestructable.

Dodie66 · 03/09/2019 22:25

We’ve had VW cars for years. Very reliable in our experience
