Air b&b help, am I right to ask for refund?

I'm on holiday in the highlands and am staying in an air b&b.
Last night was our first night and it turns out the apartment is actually over a very very loud pub. They had karaoke on until 1am (then loads of screeching on the street for at least another hour) and it honestly sounded as if they were in the room with us.
I was supposed to go in a hike today but I am so tired and feeling really frustrated. I've contacted the owners and had no reply.
The listing said it was 'family friendly' and there is no mention of noise at all, it also says it's above a newsagents when it's not it's above a pub.

Do you think I have grounds to ask for the money back for the rest of my stay so I can book somewhere else?

YADNBU - false description entirely in my view. A newsagents is not a pub. One thing if it had changed to a hairdresser's or clothes shop but a pub is entirely different.

diplodoco · 02/09/2019 08:27

Are there no reviews from past guests?

furrytoebean · 02/09/2019 08:34

There was a five star review that simply said 'great location'.

Can you contact air b&b?

furrytoebean · 02/09/2019 08:35

Also the pub is really established, there's no way it's changed from a newsagents, it must be at least twenty years old.

I'd absolutely ask via the site for a refund. As a minimum they need to know that the owners should change the description. I'd also leave a very factual review.

OtraCosaMariposa · 02/09/2019 08:47

Yup, ask for a refund. And don't wait until you get home, contact them today.

CodenameVillanelle · 02/09/2019 08:48

Do they only have the one review? Are they completely new to hosting? You should absolutely contact Airbnb for a refund.

KurriKawari · 02/09/2019 08:50

Phone Air BnB. Make sure you take photos of the location and pub. They were great when I found myself in Spain in accommodation that didnt match the description. immediate refund and tried to sort out alternative accommodation. The sooner they can find you somewhere else to stay the better.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/09/2019 08:57

Contact Airbnb immediately and ask for a refund. See if you can get somewhere else for tonight.

furrytoebean · 02/09/2019 09:26

I wouldn't have normally gone with someone with one review but the host is Sykes holiday cottages so I assumed it would be ok.

Honesty the place I stayed in had 5 star reviews- however when we turned up and the host saw we were brown she started hurling racist abuse at us. When I went back and looked at her glowing reviews they were all white people. As I said Air BnB were great, they rang her and who knows what she said to them because they refunded the money back to me and she lost out.

CodenameVillanelle · 02/09/2019 09:41

Airbnb will refund guests and let hosts keep the money. Their policy is to keep everybody happy unless there is an actual safety concern.

furrytoebean · 02/09/2019 10:57

They won't do anything because apparently saying it's 'on a lively Hugh street' is the same as same it has a pub selling £1.99 pints and karaoke in the basement.

This is the listing

And this is the pub

Make sure you leave a review warning people about the pub!

TwelveThirtyTwo · 02/09/2019 11:22

It says lively town not high street.
You should definitely get a refund.

itwaseverthus · 02/09/2019 11:58

Never in my life heard of Fort William being described as 'lively' Grin

I would definitely ask for a refund, they said pubs were within a short distance but not directly below the flat. Although how can the description say third floor flat and the pub be directly below?

furrytoebean · 02/09/2019 12:05

The pub is in a basement.

OP posts:
itwaseverthus · 02/09/2019 14:34

Either way, they lied and said it was above a newsagents. Did they say this in an email to you?

furrytoebean · 02/09/2019 14:52

Yeah, when they sent me my directions.

Honestly I have a video of the noise and it's unbelievable.

Ring Airbnb, seriously they are brilliant for sorting this kind of thing out.

We had a similar problem, the cottage we rented we supposed to be “completely isolated” and “miles from civilisation” and “in the heart of nature” (all direct quotes from the listing)
The listing played on the fact that it was in a secluded area, completely off the beaten track with picturesque view and said it was perfect for relaxing away from busy towns and cities.

The views from the front of the cottage were phenomenal, it was in a stunning area
But what the failed to mention is that the tiny garden backed on to a massive farm with dozens of people and machinery working 20 hours a day.

We Complained to the host and she said “it’s the countryside of course there are farms nearby, what do you expect?”

So we called Airbnb and the found us an alternative cottage and have us a full refund for the first two nights and a 50% refund for the rest of our break.

furrytoebean · 02/09/2019 15:58

Right Syke cottages were wonderful and have given us a new cottage!! Yay!

itwaseverthus · 02/09/2019 17:57

Oh that's brilliant news furrytoebean! Enjoy your hike and new cosy, cottage.

furrytoebean · 02/09/2019 20:46

Air b&b were shit by the way and basically accused us of trying to lie to rob them.

Can't fault the Sykes though, this place is lovely.

I'm currently drinking whiskey by a fire and having a whale of a time
