Found a lump...

Found a lump in my breast. Gut feeling tells me it's probably just some random fibrous inflammation or something (no breast cancer in family I know of) that boob has been a bit sore and achy for a little while now. I've booked to see GP, anyone know what to expect from the appointment or any words of advice or reassurance please? I feel distracted.

GP will probably refer you to the breast clinic in the 2 week urgent pathway- that seems pretty standard I think. There you will have a prod/ultrasound and probably mammogram (although I just had the ultrasound) plus chat with consultant.

Mine was inflammation of my milk ducts which the consultant guessed before he laid hands on me then located on the ultrasound. Very common in your 40s by all accounts and does cause soreness as well as lumps so fingers crossed.

Just remember most lumps are benign and even those that aren't have good success rates these days.

Best of luck

I found a lump in my breast and pretty much as above, it can be very common and absolutely nothing to worry about. My GP did examine my breasts before referring but did say early on he thought it was nothing basically. Positive thoughts hun the scans nothing to worry about either

I’m glad you’ve made an appointment to get it checked. It is often nothing serious. Good luck!

You will get an urgent appointment at the breast clinic where they have to see you within two weeks. Most are equipped to do all tests on the day so you could be there several hours but it's much better than having lots of separate appointments for mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy and consultant. They will probably tell you there and then whether they think it's suspicious of cancer or not. If they do suspect cancer you will have to go back in a couple of weeks for biopsy results.
Hopefully it's fine, most people who are referred don't have cancer.

Thank you for your time replying... I feel sick but don't know if it's anxiety or I'm getting ill!

Good to know that things move quite quickly and people are taken seriously.

I had the same and mine was BC. I was told on the same day and plans were put in place for my treatment. They (the NHS) were amazing.
The fact that you have some pain is a good thing, which probably sounds odd but from what I learnt the cancerous lumps often don't hurt and that's why they can be hard to find. Thanks

ShutItMorrissey · 02/09/2019 09:07

Same happened to me a year ago. GP referred me to the breast clinic and I was seen ten days later. It was just a cyst which disappeared of its own accord within a few weeks. The wait for the breast clinic was short but very worrying and yes, distracting, though.

It's far more likely to be nothing rather than something but getting it seen to ASAP is exactly the right thing to do. Even if it is horribly stressful Flowers

I had the same experience in July. I fully expected the GP to pat me on the head and wave me out but she didn't. She agreed there was a lump, it was painful and she thought it would not be cancer but wouldn't want to take the risk. I'd had a similar lump before which turned out to be nothing so wasn't too worried
It was diagnosed as breast cancer 2 weeks later.
It does seem that breast clinics are well staffed and funded in the NHS compared to some other specialities. Many, many women get referred and are given a reassuring all clear very quickly but if it's not good news the treatment is swift.

@ranoutofquinoaandprosecco and @NotWavingButMNing I'm sorry to hear about your diagnoses and wish you the best Flowers

We are so lucky to have the NHS.

I had this back in March....i had a mammogram and ultrasound and it turned out to be a cyst...its still there....fingers crossed yours is a cyst too x

Mistigri · 02/09/2019 12:32

How old are you?

Soreness/achiness suggests that it could be a cyst. I found a lump just before turning 50 - from the size I knew it was more likely to be a cyst (especially as it had developed quite suddenly) but I was sent for a mammogram + ultrasound. Had a diagnosis (cyst) within 48 hours of seeing the GP. Hope you get some reassurance quickly.

nanbread · 02/09/2019 13:56

I'm 40. The lump itself doesn't hurt to press (well at the moment I'm premenstrual so both boobs are bit tender) but I've had a slightly achy feeling in that boob alone. The lump is fairly large maybe 2 X 3 cm - and feels irregular in shape. It's just under the nipple.

My needle biopsy results took a week to come back.
Whatever it turns out to be, the treatment is excellent and the doctors and nurses are lovely.

nanbread · 02/09/2019 22:03

The GP I saw was brilliant and so empathetic and gentle with me, I instantly felt better. Now just have to wait for my referral.... fingers crossed it won't be too long!
